Scottish Cycling is delighted to announce that nominations are open for the Scottish Cycling Awards 2019. This year, there will be six awards open for nominations from the public which will recognise the great achievements made by volunteers and riders throughout 2019. Scottish Cycling are extremely proud of those who coordinate clubs, deliver events, coach riders and all the other contributions which make a significant positive impact on the sport.

Nominations are now being welcomed for six categories, from which a short list will be drawn up and a winner selected by our panel of expert judges. Nominations are open until 5pm on Sunday the 19th of January, with the shortlist announced the week of the 27th of January. The winner of each award will be announced at the , on the 7th of March at the Stirling Court Hotel.

The awards categories, which are open for public nominations are:

Coach of the Year

Event of the Year

HSBC UK Recreational Cycling Award

Rider of the Year

Volunteer of the Year

Awards Criteria

Club of the Year

This Scottish Cycling Club of the Year Award recognises a club that has demonstrated a commitment to development, resulting in increased participation, inclusion and diversity in its membership. Please note that this is a club award focussing on development achievements and not a team award focusing on performance success.

Areas of consideration for this award:

  • The development of committee structures and roles to improve the club
  • Innovative projects that have increased participation, membership and inclusion of the club
  • Proactive and creative marketing and communication that has increased participants and recruited new members to the club
  • Links with community stakeholders that have increased the resources/efficiency of the club
  • Links with other partners and the wider community that have enabled the club to develop, whilst increasing participation, inclusion and diversity
  • How the committee has worked with club members to improve the quality of provision and the overall member experience

Volunteer of the Year

The Scottish Cycling Volunteer of the Year Award celebrates the passion, contribution and commitment of Scottish Cycling volunteers, who regularly go over and above to make a difference to the cycling community.

Anyone who has volunteered in a role connected to Scottish Cycling, for example, a club volunteer, event organiser or event volunteer, official or Mountain Bike Leader can be nominated in this category. This is not an exhaustive list and nominations are encouraged from all areas of the sport.

Nominees for this award should exemplify the following criteria:

  • Exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to supporting/developing cycling
  • Having a significant, positive impact within their area of involvement
  • An individual who is an inspiration and positive influence on others

Event of the Year

The Scottish Cycling Event of the Year Award recognises a competitive event that has made a significant positive impact on both the riders and community which it serves. This event could be for any level of rider, from Go-Ride Racing to British level, and could be any discipline of event taking place in Scotland under British or Scottish Cycling.

Areas of consideration for this award:

  • An event which has been organised by a strong working group or committee
  • An event which was particularly rewarding for the volunteers involved in the delivery
  • An event created to develop competitive opportunities for a specific group of cyclists
  • An event which has displayed particularly strong inclusion and diversity
  • An event with innovative use of communications, branding or media

Coach of the year

The Scottish Cycling Coach of the Year Award will be made to a coach who has made a significant impact to the development or performance of a rider(s).

Nominees for this award should exemplify the following criteria:

  • Has adopted an athlete-centred approach to coaching
  • Has made a significant impact to the development or performance of a rider(s)
  • Has created an appropriate and effective environment to develop the rider(s) towards their goals.
  • Has demonstrated innovative practice in their coaching

HSBC UK Recreational Cycling Award

This award celebrates the passion, contribution and commitment of HSBC UK Let’s Ride volunteers, recognising those who lead recreational rides; supporting beginners to intermediate cyclists, families, and/or women only cyclists. For example; Ride Social leaders, Breeze ride leaders, Guided ride leaders.

Nominees for this award should exemplify the following criteria:

  • Exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to supporting/developing cycling through the HSBC UK recreational programme they are involved with
  • Having a significant, positive impact within the relevant HSBC UK recreational programme(s)

An individual who is an inspiration and positive influence on others

Rider of the Year

This will be awarded to the individual whose achievement(s) represents excellence in cycling at the highest level. A rider may be nominated for a single outstanding performance, or several performances throughout the year.

Nominations will be judged on achievements from Jan 1st – Dec 31st 2019.

Nominees for this award should exemplify the following criteria:

  • The result(s) achieved
  • The level of the event(s) a rider has achieved in together with the quality of the competition (World, European and British).  Consideration will be given to other significant factors such as the breaking of a record at World, European, British level.
  • Inspirational impact of the achievement
  • Sportsmanship and integrity

Eligibility: the athlete must have been eligible to represent Scotland over the nomination period.
