OVO Energy Tour of Britain 2019
Glasgow and Kelso | Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September 2019
Glasgow and the south west of Scotland could not have looked better for the start of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain on Saturday. George Square welcomed riders to sign on while the HSBC Glasgow Go Ride coaches delivered skills sessions for kids, and the Glasgow Riderz took to the start line to ride the opening lap of the course. As the peloton rolled out and headed south to the market town of Kirkcudbright, it was clear it was going to be a good day of racing.
The day’s breakaway was caught with 7km to go and the Jumbo-Visma rider Dylan Groenewgen – whose team had controlled the pace of the peloton throughout – outsprinted Davide Cimolai (Israel Cycling Academy) and Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) to win the 201.5km stage.
Stage Two of the race started and finished in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. This meant the town centre was a hub of activity for the entire day with Breeze riders leading out the peloton and the Kelso Wheelers providing entertainment for all the family.
British time trial talent Alex Dowsett almost pulled off a dramatic victory, escaping solo with a few kilometres remaining only to suffer “heartbreak” as the sprinters came around him with 100 metres to go. The crowds were going wild as he came into Kelso but sadly Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) took the stage win with Dowsett finishing in seventh.
Ras na mBan Stage Race
Ireland | 4th - 8th September 2019
Young Scottish talent Anna Shackley put together a fantastic race in order to take third at the Ras na mBan stage race in Ireland. Riding for the Great Brtain Team, Shackley performed exceptionally in the individual time trail to place second and remained high in the general classification throughout the race.
