HSBC UK British National Cross Country Championships 2019

Rugeley

Saturday 20th July 2019

Cannock Chase hosted this year’s National Championships with a course that made use of a mixture of fast single tracked wooded sections, tough climbs and the featured rock garden. Scottish riders performed exceptionally in the championships with lots of medals won. In the elite men's race, Grant Ferguson's attempt to make it seven titles in a row was unsuccessful despite a gutsy ride as he had to settle for second to Frazer Clacherty. Isla Short took second in the women's race with Kerry Mcphee taking the bronze medal.

Annie Last wins the 2019 HSBC UK | National Cross Country senior title.

Sean Flynn had another great race, taking second in the U23 mens, while Jamie Johnston was third in the junior mens. In the junior women, Anna Flynn was second and Anna McGorum third.

HSBC UK British National Downhill Championships 2019

Oswestry

Saturday 20th July 2019

The British National Downhill Championship took place at Revolution Bike park this weekend. The venue's reputation as a classic downhill track came to the fore with a perfect blend of bike park open jump sections as well as tight steep technical descents littered with roots and loose rocks to keep all standards of riders on their toes. Scottish rider Maya Atkinson had a great ride in her debute in the elite women category and Tea Jenson took second in the junior women.

Member of the Scottish Cycling Young People's Panel Ryan Brannen was competing at the event and provided gave this report of the day;

"It was a great weekend in Wales for the British National Downhill Championships, at Revolution Bike Park. It started off wet and wild as the track was extremely slippery and muddy during Saturday morning practice. However over the course of the day it was drying out and become faster each run. On Sunday morning the track had become rougher with lots of holes which would make for tough racing. All weekend the bike was running fast and I felt good. In seeding runs I came 4th which I was pretty happy with and it meant I knew I was on pace. In my race run I was flat out from the start determined to leave nothing in the tank. However Iost it on a rough corner and ended up over the bars, managed to get back on but losing so much time meant that my race run was over! Although my run didn’t go to plan I will take a lot of positives from the weekend move on to the next one."

National Youth Omnium Championships

Manchester

Sunday 21st July 2019

The National Youth Omnium final was a busy day of racing with plenty of positives to take from the day. It was an chance for the riders to test themselves against the best in country with it being the only chance outside of the British Youth and Junior Track Championships to do so. All the riders took the opportunity to get stuck into the racing and managed to put into practice some of the skills they worked on throughout the winter track training clusters or R.A.C.E National sessions. These included improved starts on the kilometre time trial, riding at the front of the elimination race or using the track and lulls in racing to attack the bunch in the scratch or points races.
