This weekend saw the launch of the 2016 Go Girls programme in 4 venues across the country. Over 50 very excited young girls took part in two fun, social days on bikes.

The aim of this very special programme is to gather girls aged 8-12 years old to have fun on bikes, ride with some amazing role models and get some coaching to increase their confidence to ride their bikes more often while increasing their social circle and network of mountain biking friends.  This in turn it is hoped will encourage the girls to stay in the sport.

The weekend also provided the opportunity for 11 new coaches, part of the programme, to gain invaluable experience being supported by experienced coaches. Five other experienced coaches volunteered their time over the weekend to help.

The weekend was further enhanced by the support of 3 elite athletes, Kerry MacPhee, Isla Short and Lucy Grant.

The feedback from all involved has been extremely positive and encouraging.

Morven Brown, Scottish Cycling Regional Development Officer – West, one of the experienced coaches involved in the weekend, said:

"What an amazing day! Brilliant fun and the girls got so much out of the day. The elite athletes were fantastic and the support from all concerned was truly inspirational."

Isla Short said:

"What a great day! I had such a lot of fun with the girls and I would be delighted to help out in the future. What an inspirational event!"

The girls involved in the programme had the opportunity to buy amazing custom jerseys supplied at a discount by Scottish global cycling brand, Endura.

The Go Girls programme will be a part of wider 3 year strategy from Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland to increase the number of female coaches and leaders – to provide more role models and opportunities to be access the sport.
