Coach Support and Mentoring

Coaches develop expertise in a range of formal and informal ways. While formal courses provide a good foundation, coaches also need to learn ‘on the job’ either on their own or ideally mediated by someone else, often a more experienced coach, developer or some sort of mentor (Penny Crisfield).

“Behind every successful person, there is one elementary truth; somewhere, somehow, someone cared about their growth and development; this person was their mentor.”

(Kaye 1997).

How mentoring works?

“Mentoring is where a coach is being guided towards acquiring new knowledge, feedback, ideas, or advice by a more knowledgeable and experienced person who has both sporting and mentoring credibility”

(InVEST, 2007).

What can a mentor help you with?

A mentor can help you develop in almost any aspect of coaching. Some of these may be;

  • Improving your technical or tactical knowledge
  • Helping you meet a new coaching challenge (e.g. different age group or level of participants)
  • Support with a new coaching role (e.g. Head coach)
