For the first time ever, Scottish Cycling will be awarding Junior medals at the Scottish National Criterium Championships.
The Championships, incorporated into Stirling Bike Club’s Crit Under The Castle, take place on Sunday 19th June on a closed circuit around Stirling city centre.
Historically only men, women and youth A, B & C riders have been awarded National medals in the Criterium Championships, a day of fast and furious racing, each consisting of a series of short circuit laps.
With the increasing number of juniors taking part in this event, Scottish Cycling has decided to take the opportunity to include another medal category, recognizing the hard work and dedication of riders of the Junior age category.
Norrie Petrie, Crit Under The Castle Event Organiser said:
"Crit Under The Castle is into its third year with this year seeing almost 400 entries. There is no doubt that cycle racing in Scotland is in a great place and we at Stirling Bike Club are delighted to be incorporating the National Youth Road Race and Senior Circuit Championships again this year. It is exceptionally encouraging to have such high entries into the Youth Races and, for the first time, the Junior riders will be recognised and racing for the title of Junior Circuit Race Champions. Our event promotes equality and tries hard to encourage participation at every age category. Working with Stirling Council, Active Stirling, Scottish Cycling, Historic Scotland and our sponsors, Morrisons of Stirling, we anticipate an action packed day in our historic city."
Craig Burn, Chief Executive said:
“Scottish Cycling works with clubs across Scotland to help develop and grow the sport. Youth development is incredibly important at grassroots level and therefore it is important to be able to be able to award those youths when they move into junior level. Stirling Bike Club does a fantastic job of organising Crit Under The Castle so it is great to see it growing year on year and a very fitting event to begin awarding Junior Criterium medals.”
