Grant Ferguson saw a mechanical scupper his hopes in the elite men’s race at the UEC European Mountain Bike Championships in Sweden on Sunday.

A broken shifter ended the 22-year-old’s ambitions of a high placing and turned the race into a training exercise.

The Scot worked tirelessly on the Huskvarna Mountain but was eventually pulled from the race under the 80% rule as he continued to suffer from gear problems.

Three-time Olympic champion Julien Absalon of France won in 1:35:34 with Swiss rider Fabian Giger second and Czech Republic’s Ondrej Cink third.

Under-23 race

In the under-23 men’s race, Iain Paton was 31st after six laps - 25.5km - of racing.

Paton crossed the line in 1:32:04.7 as Victor Koretzky and Titouan Carod made it a French one-two.
Switzerland’s Marcel Guerrini completed the podium.

Great Britain Cycling Team end the championships with two medals - Sophie Wright’s gold in the junior women’s race and Evie Richard’s bronze in the under-23 event.
