Scottish Cycling's Mini Downhill Series


Downhill mountain bike is a fast and exciting sport pitting Man and Machine against the clock.

Each rider has to ride a set course comprising of jumps, drops, roots, rocks, twists and turns. The aim to complete the course in the fastest time they can.

At the Fort William World Cup the world’s best riders come to the countries only international level competition track to race in front of huge crowds of cheering fans.  

Mini Downhill is just like the real thing but smaller! Shorter courses, smaller bikes and younger riders but it has all of the passion, excitement and drama of racing!

The Mini Downhill Series will providing a pathway for aspiring young downhill riders to get their first taste of Downhill racing.

The Series will comprise of 3 regional events throughout Scotland run by Scottish Cycling with support from local clubs.

Riders will qualify at a regional event to compete in the final at the Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup.

The races will be one day events, riders will have a morning practice session of the course and will have two timed race runs in the afternoon.

The results will be decided on the fastest of the riders two timed runs so that the rider who completes the course in the shortest time is the winner.

What riders need to bring:

  • A Mountain bike which needs to be of good quality and in full safe working order;
  • All riders must be signed on by a parent or guardian
  • Full Face helmet (Make sure it fits properly); SC have a small number of helmets that can be given on a first come, first served basis.
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather and for racing; Full finger gloves and arm and leg cover are compulsory and body armour is strongly recommended.


Entry to the event at the Series Final Fort William World Cup will be by qualification at one of the four regional rounds. First, second and third place male and female riders in each age category will qualify for entry to the World Cup Final. A total of 24riders per round.

If a rider has already qualified at a previous round, then the next rider below him/her will then qualify.

Riders who qualify will receive

  • Entry to the Final race
  • A free ticket for the rider to the World cup village on Saturday 4th June
  • A free ticket for 1 parent/guardian to the world cup village on Saturday 6th June 

Provisional Timetable for each event

9.30 – Sign on and bike check opens. Course open for foot inspection only

10.30 – Course open for practice

12.30 – Course closed

13.00 – First Race Runs begin

14.00 – Second Runs begin*

15.00 – Race runs complete*

15.30 – Prize giving*
