Name: Lewis Jones

Location:   I live in Coupar Angus a few miles south of Blairgowrie

Occupation:  I’ve been at the Ancrum Outdoor Centre in Dundee for 14 years, I’m the Senior Instructor at the Centre.

How long have you been a MTB Leader and what do you enjoy most about it?

I was on the second MBL course and my certificate is number 7! I did my course back in 1999 but I was also qualified as a leader with another scheme before the MBLA as far back as 1996.

Over the years I’ve had loads of fun and challenging rides with groups. The biggest smile I’ve seen was with a lady that had struggled to get over her fear of riding downhill. We worked together for a few sessions to boost her confidence get her riding with more speed and control. Also I’ve been lucky enough to lead bike rides all over the UK, Spain and France.

How long have you been a MTB tutor and what do you enjoy most about it?

I’ve been lucky enough to work under some very experienced and excellent tutors and finished my tutorship in 2004.

I’ve been fortunate to train lots of aspirant leaders but I would say that seeing leaders that I have trained providing fun and safe bike sessions for their own groups and clients has given me the most satisfaction.

Tell us a little more about Ancrum?

Ancrum Outdoor Centre is a Local Authority centre providing outdoor activities for a wide range of clients from pupils attending with their school to adults enjoying some fun activities to trainee Instructors learning the ropes.

We have a wide range of facilities and activities on offer ranging from Water, Mountain, Wheel and Snowsports.

In terms of Mountain Biking we offer led rides on a variety of trails in local area and beyond and training courses for leaders such as Cycling Scotland Cycle Ride Leader.

Where do you run your courses from and where do you go?

We run our courses from our base at Ancrum Outdoor Centre and at Clatto Country Park. This gives us good access to training facilities such as a bike workshop as well as using the local tracks and trails of Clatto and Templeton woods.

What can people expect on you Level 2 leadership course?

Hopefully the candidates will have fun and be able to learn from someone with a passion for mountain biking and with considerable experience of leading biking groups in various environments.

When is your next UK MTB Level 2 course?

We are running a Level 2 on 5 – 6 March 2016. If you would like to book please give us a call on 01382 435911. We should be running around 3 or 4 Level 2 training courses this year.

And finally, what’s your favourite bike and riding terrain?

Whichever bike I’m on at the time but I’m most often found on my Cotic Soul steel hardtail. I’ve been riding steel bikes all my days and don’t intend to quit any time soon. Around the area where I live we have fantastic mountain trails in the Angus glens. My other favourite places to ride are Torridon. Anything with some mountains and single-track!
