It was a successful foray south for a number of our Youth riders on Sunday morning as the Dent brothers took gold for Nevis Cycles RT in their respective categories at the Scottish National Youth Time Trial. Also on the podium were Alfie George, Jamie Penny (Discovery Juniors), Georgia Mansfield (Forres CC) and Lewis MacFarlane (Moray Firth CC).

Coming from the opposite direction, it was also a good day for Stewartry Wheelers rider Fiona Thomson but it was only fitting that the host club Glasgow Riderz should place winners onto the podium in the form of Anna Shackley, Georgia Ferry, Jack Cruden, Calum Shackley and Innes Johnston. Showing her class, there was also a gutsy ride from Ellie Park (Billy Bilsland Cycles) with the other podium steps being filled by East Kilbride RC’s Georgia Speake and Speedflex Race Team’s Alexander MacRae.

After the heavy overnight rain it was feared that the conditions would be far from ideal but on Sunday morning, the sun was out…cold to start with and remaining chilly in the shade but quite pleasant between the clouds. The A77 course is not the fastest and can be quite hard when the wind blows, which it was doing on that morning. Climbing away from Newton Mearns the road slowly curves right then left then right again before coming down to a tricky roundabout turn and heading in the opposite direction.

Climbing onto the Fenwick Plateau the area has its own micro-climate and is often the first, and last, place near Glasgow to have snow. Thankfully there’s no snow yet but there was a stiff headwind on the way to the 5-mile point. Once the turn had been made, riders were noticeably quicker on the return journey.

First off was Samuel Everett (Junior) of the host club and he was looking smooth as he passed at the 3-mile mark. In the opposite direction he was pushing harder and returned a time of 28:53.

Second rider was Murray Lawson (Edinburgh RC) and again he was looking quite composed on the way out, just trying to ride within himself until the turn. On the way back, like most of the youth riders, he was spinning out on the restricted gearing but he set a benchmark of 30:15 and this was good enough to keep him in the hot-seat and take the win in his group. Second in this age group, and first girl on the road, was a fine performance from Pedal Power RT’s Eva Young in 30:29 with EKRC’s Craig Paterson rounding out the podium in 31:33.

Onto the first of the medal categories and it was Glasgow Riderz’s Georgia Ferry who set the first marker with a time of 29:07 in the Youth B Girls. First to get close was East Kilbride RC’s Georgia Speake who finished a few minutes later in 29:47 to provisionally stand second. Neither rider had much time to catch their breath before Anna Shackley (Glasgow Riderz) flashed through the finish line in a time of 28:33 to take top spot and push the other two down a step. This was how the medal positions played out with both Anna Shackley and Georgia Ferry staying on the podium to take the team prize.

In the Boys Youth B the medals went to the last three riders off in that particular category. As it turned out, they were riding in medal order and being two minutes apart, could only view each other going in the opposite direction. First home, and in the best time of 24:34, was Nevis Cycles RT’s Alexander Dent to take the first of the Dent Golds. Next was Discovery Junior’s Alfie George, pushing hard on the return leg, in a time of 25:06. Finishing off the podium was Glasgow Riderz’s Jack Cruden, again flashing by us with his yellow shoes, in a time of 25:34.

Onto the Youth A Girls and the first podium not to feature any Glasgow Riderz. Fiona Thomson of Stewartry Wheelers was first away in this category and she was also the first home in a time of 28:31. Her two-minute rider was Ellie Park (Billy Bilsland Cycles) and she was pushing hard in both directions and returned in a time of 27:12, a time that would not be bettered in her category. Georgia Mansfield (Forres CC) would come closest and posted a time of 28:23 to push Fiona Thomson into third and the bronze medal position. There was no team prize as there weren’t enough counting finishers.

The final Youth category was the Boys A and it was a closely fought battle with excellent times. Looking calm and composed the whole way round was a very fluid Stephen Dent (Nevis Cycles RT), second last rider off in this category. His time of 23:14 was a great effort in such windy conditions. Running some 8-minutes ahead of him on the road was Lewis MacFarlane of Moray Firth CC) and his time of 24:18 had him in the hot-seat until Dent finished.

First to get inside 25-minutes had been the Riderz’s Jonathan Hillbourne in 24:48 and the other racers on the day to post a sub-25 were Vincent Jozajtis (Stirling Bike Club) in 24:47, Calum Shackley (Glasgow Riderz) in 24:31 and Innes Johnston (Glasgow Riderz) in 24:34. Pushing them all down a spot, and claiming the last step on the podium was Speedflex RT’s Alexander MacRae in a time of 24:24, a close grouping for the final medal position. A quick word for Josh Whitehead (Unattached) who pulled out of his pedal at the start and was given a restart five minutes later. His time of 24:13 would have seen him take silver but the rules state that the restart shouldn’t have happened and so his official time of 29:13 put him outside the medals.

Fitting that the Riderz pairing of Calum Shackley and Innes Johnston should take the team award as they finished 3-seconds apart and just off the individual medal positions.

That was the end of the Youth positions but there was also an open TT part to the event. Scottish Cycling’s Morven Brown (Dales Cycles RT) swapped out her cyclocross wheels for some borrowed road slicks and posted a 30:08; just outside the 30-minute mark but picking up the award for closest to that marker. Starting shortly afterwards Martin Ferry (Scotia CC) posted a flying time of 22:58 that would eventually see him into 2nd spot overall. He had to wait some 40 minutes after finishing only to see everyone else fall short of the mark…until last man off, John Dunlop (Loudoun RC) finally returned in a time some 28-seconds to the good to take the win in 22:30. Notable mentions to the legend that is David Millar (SVTTA) in 23:12, Scott Glasgow (Glasgow Nightingales CC) who was on a flyer, having set a personal best the previous day, only to puncture just after the turn and Laura Cluxton (Rock and Road Cycles) on her tandem piloted by Lynsey Carson (Team Thomsons Cycles). Their time of 25:14 was decent but there’s more to come as they fine-tune their position.
