Velosure-Giordana’s Tom Bustard raced away from a disintegrating lead group to take victory in the Gifford Road Race on Saturday.

The Velosure-Giordana riders headed up the race early on before Raleigh’s Evan Oliphant took lead of a small group, 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

The race then started to break up and a clear group of leaders emerged, working hard together and opening up a healthy lead over the others.

ERC’s Sean Noon led a chasing group but by the sixth lap, the leaders were well away, almost a minute ahead of Noon.

Heading into the penultimate lap, the leading group had been whittled down to eight riders and as the pace picked up, it was Bustard who had enough left in the tank to accelerate away from the others and take the win.

Davie Lines Starley of Primal Pro Cycling was second and in third, it was NFTO’s James McCallum. The main bunch of the race were three minutes behind after dropping even further behind on the final lap.

In the support race, Martin Graham (Midlothian CC) was victorious, leading from Andrew Gourlay (Edinburgh RC) and Jack Richards of Deeside Thistle.
