With financial assistance from the Braveheart Foundation the first ever NoSCA team travelled to the Errigal International Youth Tour in Donegal (2nd – 5th August) this year. The team was made up of ten riders from the following clubs:- East Sutherland Wheelers, City of Inverness CC, Cairngorm CC, and Forres CC .
Racing was based over three days around the village of Churchill in the beautiful Donegal countryside which was blessed with fantastic weather throughout, with the final stage being a criterium in the town of Letterkenny.
The trip began with the long car journey south to the port of Cairnryan where we boarded the ferry for the two hour sailing to Larne. On arrival at Larne we were still faced with a two hour journey to our accommodation at the Gartan Outdoor Centre just outside Churchill.
On the Saturday morning there was an air of excitement and nervousness around the centre as, for some, this would be the first time they had ridden in such a big field of riders. With final checks completed on their bikes the NoSCA team gathered in the village of Churchill all professionally turned out in the new kit for the first time, with the atmosphere already beginning to build.
As this was, for many of the team, the first time they had competed in such a big event they all did exceptionally well, in not only the effort they put into the races, but in the polite and well-mannered way they conducted themselves on and off the race circuits, with all of them being very proud to sport the new kit.
On the Sunday morning the crowds began to gather around Loch Gartan for the start of Stage 2 the hill climb Time Trial which began at the outdoor centre and finished in the village of Churchill. With crowds lining the route to shout encouragement the riders set off at minute intervals. Every member of the team gave it their all in what was a very punishing climb with the best result coming from Angus Claxton finishing 4th in the Youth A category.
