The recent successes of Ben Wyvis Cycling Club were recognised at the Ross & Cromarty Sports Council Annual Awards Ceremony last week where coach, Andy Russell, was awarded Coach of the Year and athlete, Tom Evans, was runner up for Junior Sports Personality of the Year.

Ben Wyvis Cycle Club

Andy Russell received the Coach of the Year Award. Andy has coached the members of Ben Wyvis Cycle Club and before it, the Square Wheels Mountain Bike Race team, for the past 4 years. Square Wheels RT was the top Scottish team in the Scottish Cross Country Mountain Bike Race Series 3 years in a row and this year, the newly formed Ben Wyvis CC finished 2nd in the SXC series.

Andy has a great rapour with the Ross-shire youngsters he coaches and the respect of his fellow clubmates. He often sacrifices his own free time, equipment & opportunities for others and is always there, rain or shine to coach and support his team. Every race and every training session.

His no nonsense, ex-army discipline and tough training regimens, achieves good results and the utmost respect from the young racing cyclists he coaches. He is now undergoing further coaching qualifications through Scottish cycling to further his credentials and is looking forward to bringing on the next batch of cycle racing champions.

Andy is a generous and hard working coach who shuns the glory and limelight but strives to allow others to reach theirs. A truly deserving winner of this award, well done Andy!

The successes of Ben Wyvis athlete, Tom Evans, were also recognised at the local awards ceremony as he was named runner up for the Junior Sports Personality of the Year. Tom is the current Junior Scottish & British Cross Country Mountain Bike Race Series Champion. With Scottish Cycling, he has competed at the highest level at UCI World Cup Events across Europe and has had success in road & criterium racing, elevating him to 3rd category before the age of 18. Tom is a true champion at an early age and we wish him all the best for the future. The best is definitely yet to come!

Coach Andy Russell

Well done to Ben Wyvis CC for their great achievements in 2012, we look forward to seeing what 2013 has in store for you!
