More than 50 Scottish riders travelled to Manchester for the 2017 HSBC UK British Cycling Track Championships to compete against the best in Britain, in what proved to be a very successful weekend.

Day one kicked off with the Women’s Sprint which saw a PB for Lusia Steele, Glasgow Cycle Team, in qualifying and Jessica Lee, Glasgow Wheelers, as best placed Scottish rider, narrowly missing out on bronze to Sophie Capewell in the deciding match of the finals.  Next up was Aileen McGlynn, piloted by Louise Haston in the Para-Cycling BVI Kilometre Time Trial, where they took Silver behind Sophie Thornhill and Corinne Hall in at Commonwealth Games qualifying time of 1.09.752. In the Women’s Individual Pursuit Katie Archibald, Team WNT, qualified fastest in 3.28.745, more than 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and also meeting the Commonwealth Games qualification standards.  She went on to catch Team Breeze’s Emily Nelson in the Gold Medal ride claiming her first British title of the weekend.  Boot Out Breast Cancer CC’s Neah Evans took bronze from Emily Kay of Team WNT, while Angus Claxton, 100% Me, was the highest placed Scottish rider in the men’s event in 6th place.

After the achievements of day one, the medals kept coming for the Scots on day 2, 8 in total over 6 events.  Katie Archibald and Neah Evans continued their winning form taking Silver and Bronze respectively in the Women’s Keirin behind Sophie Capewell from Team Terminator, as well as Gold and Silver in the Women’s Scratch Race.  Earlier in the day, Evans, along with her Boot Out Breast Cancer CC team won Bronze in the Women’s Team Pursuit with a catch over Team 22 A.  Jonathan Mitchell, Billy Bilsland Cycles, took Bronze in the Men’s Kilometre Time Trial, while Aileen McGlynn and Louise Haston added to their Silver from day 1, taking the British title in the Para-Cycling BVI Flying 200m Time Trial, in their second Commonwealth Games qualifying time of the weekend. The highlight of day 2 was however a sensational ride by Joe Nally, www.hardie-bikes.com, to take the British title in the Men’s Point’s Race, beating Ethan Hayter of 100% Me in the final sprint to win by 1 point.  If he is not the first, then it has certainly been many years since a Junior rider has won a Senior title in this event.

Day 3 and time to focus on the team events. It was Bronze for Scotland (Andy Brown, Angus Claxton, Joe Nally and Evan Oliphant) in the Men’s Team Pursuit with a win over Secret-Training CC, while Scottish rider Jonathan Wale was part of Gold medal winning Brother NRG Driveplan in the same event.   In Men's Team Sprint North West Region A (Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens & Joe Truman) took the title with Scotland (Mitch, Lewis and Alistair Fielding) finishing 5th.   Moving onto the women’s event Scotland A (Emma Baird & Lucy Grant) won Silver and Scotland B (Jessica Lee and Lauryn Dawber) missed out on bronze to BC West Midlands region by 0.067 seconds  to finish 4th.  In the women’s 500m Time Trial Brit Jackson finished in 6th place, while Katie Archibald took her 3rd title of the weekend in the Women’s Point’s Race, with Neah Evans collecting Bronze in the same event.

Overall the Scots won 17 Medals in 12 of the 22 Championships being contested in Manchester in what proved to be a very positive event for our more experienced riders and those to watch out for in the future.
