A year on from the Commonwealth Games: A message from our CEO

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since Glasgow’s memorable Commonwealth Games however I’m delighted that it continues to have a positive impact on Scottish Cycling and, crucially, on the sport at grassroots level.

There is now more interest in cycling in Scotland than ever before. The number of clubs is growing, as is membership and I am pleased to say we have an extremely solid platform to build on for years to come.

Inspired by the exploits of our athletes at Glasgow 2014, our young cyclists across road, track, BMX and Mountain Biking have excelled in UK competitions and that is something which fills me with immense pride.

As we now turn our attention to the road inter-regionals, I have no doubt those impressive competitors will continue to fly the flag for Scotland.

Scottish Cycling’s success reaches beyond Britain, with many of our cyclists impressing on the world stage this year.  Our young cyclists have fantastic role models to look up to in the shape of Grant Ferguson, Callum Skinner and Katie Archibald to name just a few.

A four year funding package from sportscotland will allow us to safeguard the future of the sport. With this funding, we are able to progress our facilities strategy, increase the scale of our grassroots events and invest in clubs. Meanwhile, ScottishPower’s continued support of the Youth Series has been crucial in the development of our young cyclists through regular competition.

Fans of the sport have been able to see top level cycling first-hand at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, the Tour of Britain and the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.  World class competition will again come to Scotland when the Revolution Series starts at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in November.

Membership has increased by more than 1000 in the space of a year, with 9700 members now able to access our first class services. The work of indefatigable volunteers helped cycling become more accessible than ever, with the launch of 22 new clubs.

Clubs are a key component of the cycling scene in Scotland. They organise events, support our coaches, leaders and officials and provide a range of opportunities locally. Without them, many would not be able to experience the fun and enjoyment that cycling brings.

Our AGM is on the horizon and we are currently working on our Annual Report. Within that document, we will be able to paint a fuller picture of the success and other highlights from the last year. I am proud of everything we have achieved and I am even more excited for what is to come. Our success could not happen without the tireless effort of our volunteers, coaches, officials and everybody else involved with Scottish Cycling. Thanks for all your hard work. Ride safely!
