SERRL Summer Series event 24
Location: Benenden, Kent
Event: 22 September 2013
Report: Snowdon Sports
Alexander Donaldson sprinted to victory in event 24 of the SERRL Summer Series in Benenden.
The London Dynamo man sat in with the main bunch for much of the race as a few riders tried to spring away from the front before being brought back in.
With nobody seeming strong or keen enough to make a break and with so many descents, it made it very difficult to get away from the bunch.
But then, on the final lap, Donaldson approached the final climb with a bunch sprint in mind. He overtook the other riders and held his position to cross the line first by a bike length.
Speaking after the race, Donaldson said: “I was sick the week before and didn’t race so I wasn’t sure how the legs would be. I just sat in and kept eye on the front.
“A few got away off the front but it was only ever one or two. It wasn’t really a fast race but no one seemed keen.
“I picked up on the final lap and moved up to the front, I knew it’d be a bunch sprint. A few guys had digs so I jumped on the wheels, kept my position and when the last hill came up, there was one guy in front. I overtook him, shifted down two and went.”
