Rutland – Melton CiCLE Classic organiser Colin Clews has appealed for sponsors to come forward and support the British international single day road cycle race.
The East Midlands based UCI Europe Tour 1.2 race, which was first held in 2005, requires the backing for its 2013 edition.
Race organisers need to raise the minimum £20,000 required to stage next year’s event, which has over time grown dramatically to become one of Britain’s biggest races and is due to take place on Sunday 21 April.
“After signing in January of this year a three year contract with our principle sponsor we believed that the race was at least secure until 2014”, said race director Colin Clews.
But problems with the sponsor mean the expected funding is now unlikely to arrive, leaving organisers in search of new backers.
“It seems extremely unlikely that the outcome will be helpful to next year’s race,” Clews added. “If an alternative sponsor or sponsors are not found, the unthinkable that the race will have to be cancelled for 2013 seems inevitable.”
Organisers already have requests from eight foreign based teams to take part, from as far afield as Poland, Slovakia and the United States. The first two instalments of the event were part of the British Cycling Premier Calendar Series.
Anyone interested in helping support the retention of the CiCLE Classic, in any way, is asked to contact Colin Clews on 07979 85 6262.
