Event: 14 October 2012

Steven Lawley of TheBicycleworks.com set a new course record of two minutes and ten seconds for the Kingscavil Hill Climb near Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.

In a close-fought battle, Lawley took top spot from last year’s winner David Griffiths, Glasgow Wheelers, who peaked the 0.9 mile climb in 2.13, one second down on his previous record-setting mark.

Mark McGuire of Perth United came third. He clocked 2.21, a performance strong enough to win him the Youth 'A' prize and help his club scoop the team contest.

Rising talent Jennifer Taylor, of host club the West Lothian Clarion, smashed the women’s record to win the female competition in 2.53. She continued the rich run of form which saw her take top women’s spot in the prestigious Tour of the Trossachs time trial last week.

West Lothian Clarion took two out of three podium places in the women’s event, with Diane Clayton Chisholm taking third place, beaten to the line by Gabriella Nordin of Sandy Wallace Cycles who claimed second in 3.11.

Out of a strong field of over 100 entries West Lothian riders scored strong performances across a range of categories. Father and son Clarion duo Matt and Alex Ball won the veterans’ and youth Cat ‘D’ prizes respectively.

With a growing number of young riders taking part – there were 12 from West Lothian Clarion cycling club – British Cycling’s Scottish talent coach Mark Young was on hand to spot the future Hoys and Pendletons.

The annual lung-busting race up the hill to Kingscavil is also attracting national media attention. BBC Scotland’s Adventure Show covered this year’s event and a full report is expected to be broadcast by the programme in January.

Race organiser Paul Hammond of West Lothian Clarion said: “We saw some really gutsy performances and it was great to have such a big crowd at the roadside cheering them on. The atmosphere at this event is special with people ringing cowbells and a piper playing as riders grovel over the finishing line.

"As a cycling club the West Lothian Clarion puts a big emphasis on friendliness as well as competition. I was delighted to see so many families at the event."
