Charge Bikes’ Chris Metcalfe took first from a field of 53 starters in the Melton Classic - a support race for the Cycle Classic for category three and four riders.

Metcalfe led from 16-year-old Peter Cocker (Witham Wheelers CC), a second category junior racer who looks to have a bright future in the sport.

Metcalfe, 30, was in the top 15 across the first green lane section of the race and made an effort to pull away on the first uphill of the race.

Cocker suffered a puncture in the latter stages of the race but got a spare on quickly and managed to keep hold of second place.

Chris Metcalfe said: “I decided to dig in on the first uphill. I went hard from the start and tried not to get caught. Another rider got across to me and we worked together well.

“I was comfortable off road and on the technical stuff. Peter got a puncture and then got a replacement and rode very well. I think I was just under a minute in front of him by the end, I was out on my own.”
