Peterborough will once again play host to first-class professional cycling this summer, when round six of The Halfords Tour Series takes place on Tuesday 29 May. The city is now one of only three venues in the UK to have hosted the event every year since the start of The Tour Series in 2009.

Ten of Britain's top professional cycling teams will once again battle it out on a 1.1km city centre course, led by Peterborough's own Steve Lampier, who won the Boardman Bikes Sprints competition during last year's Halfords Tour Series.

Lampier says he’s pleased to see the race return to the city: "For the fourth year running The Halfords Tour Series returns to my adopted city of Peterborough, where the race is greeted by knowledgeable and enthusiastic spectators. On a fast circuit which leads to exciting racing, I'm looking forward to the night already! Let's hope for a great evening of fast and furious racing!"

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the city centre for the race, which starts at 7pm and will again be televised on ITV4 the following evening. Events will take place from 11am, including children's races, community cycling events and entertainment in the lead up to the big race. Peterborough is also one of only four venues to host the 2012 women’s Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series, which starts at 5pm.

Annette Joyce, Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council, said it will be a real honour to see the series in Peterborough for the fourth time: “We’re thrilled to have been chosen to stage a round of the Halfords Tour Series in 2012. It creates such an amazing atmosphere as thousands of people flock into the city centre to watch the riders. The Halfords Tour Series is a great opportunity to showcase what Peterborough has to offer and benefits the local economy.”

The course as on previous occasions will start and finish in the Cathedral Square, giving spectators a grandstand view of the action. The circuit will also take in Church Street, Cowgate, Bourges Boulevard and Bridge Street. The 2012 Halfords Tour Series will begin in Kirkcaldy, Fife on Tuesday 15 May, with rounds taking place in England, Scotland and Wales for the first time over the course of the 11-round Series.
