News: Disc Brakes in Road Racing

Share |

19 December 2011

British Cycling has received a number of enquiries in recent weeks concerning the use of disc brakes in Road Races.

British Cycling's Technical Regulations take their lead from those of the world governing body, the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale).

Julien Carron, Coordinateur Technologique at the UCI was contacted to clarify the current situation. He replied with the following:

"I am the technological coordinator in charge of everything related to the equipment and I can confirm that disc brakes are not allowed in road races for 2012. This is a technical innovation that has to be presented to the UCI and evaluated by the Equipment Commission before potentially being approved in competition. For the moment, this technical innovation was not yet submitted to us."
