Day 2, Para-Cycling Road World Championships, Time Trial - Bike Time Trial, Tandem Time Trial and Trike Time Trial

David Stone picked up a silver medal in the T2 Trike Time Trial on a dramatic day for the GB Para-Cycling Team.

Stone has had a challenging build-up to the Road World Championships after crashing while riding the course in Belgium three weeks ago that has left him with back pain and unable to train as hard as he normally would.

"I was flying before Lieige and everything was coming together and then the crashed happened. Even until yesterday I wasn't sure if I'd be able to race today."

David rode the 13.2km Time Trial in 27.12, finishing nearly a minute ahead of his long term rival Georgio Ferroni from Italy. David knew retaining his world title was going to be tough and it was snatched from him by Germany's Hans-Peter Durst.

Britain, Italy and Austria challenged Durst's recent classification after the race, as his previous career in paratriathlon suggested it may not be accurate, but after reassessing the rider the UCI upheld its original decision.

Stone said: "It is important to check that the classification is correct, it draws a line under it. We now know he's in my category and where we stand.

"Deep down I've been wishing for a new challenge. You get a bit bored when you keep winning so I see it as a good thing. I get the chance to push myself and when I beat him it will feel good. "

Commenting on his second place, Stone said: "I am very happy with my performance and the way I rode. I gave everything I could. I am normally much stronger so I know I can make up the 22 seconds. Just give me a month."

In other events, Jody Cundy placed 12th in the C4 Time Trial and Lora Turnham and Louise Haston finished 9th against a very strong field in the women's tandem. Although slightly disappointed with their result, the girls picked up vital qualification points by finishing in the top 10 and were only 1.36 away from the gold medal which is a bridgeable gap for London 2012.
