Byrne Wins Pete's Race in Yorkshire

Carleton, near Pontefract, West Yorkshire, 89 miles
Promoted by: Featherstone RC
Event: 26th June 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports

HERBALIFE-Wheelbase rider Dillon Byrne sprinted to victory ahead of his eight breakaway rivals in the Pete's Race, promoted by Featherstone Road Club on a six-lap course around Pontefract in West Yorkshire.

Byrne proved strongest in an uphill finish to the 89-mile race, after having engineered his win with team-mate Jack Cutsforth.

With one lap to go the pair dropped to the back of the break and planned their attack, Cutsforth going first with around a mile and a half to go and stringing out the field before Byrne launched his ultimately successful push.

Several earlier breakaway attempts came to nothing, but at around half distance the decisive move went and had quickly swelled to nine riders who opened up a lead of around three minutes.

Heading into the final stages Cutsforth launched his attack, but after he had been reeled back in Adam Duggleby (Science in Sport.com) wound up his sprint first, only for Byrne to come round him on the line and take the win, while Duggleby was second and Sportscover's Tom Bustard third.
