Report: Sheffrec Evening RR #1

Event: 7th June 2011
Promoted by: Sheffrec CC
Event HQ: Fox and Goose Pub, Wigley, Sheffield
Report: Marc Etches
Event Details

48 fourth category riders departed the Fox & Goose Public House to tackle 17 laps of the Barlow Triangle Circuit. The conditions were dull but changeable but the threatening rain never made an appearance. The first few laps we ridden at a fast pace with several riders dropped on the opening laps. The main bunch remained together for the next few laps. Lap 6 brought the prime lap and this was taken by Mark Filder riding for the promoting club, Sheffrec CC. This stirred the bunch once more and again dropped a couple more riders. A few attacks came and went but the active riders on the front of the peloton chased most gaps down as fast as they came.

Over the closing stages the field lapped a group of 8 riders giving them a clear run at the line. In the sprint, it was once again to be the night for Mark Fidler of Sheffrec CC who would hold off the fighting bunch to claim victory by half a wheel from Tom Sutton of Sheffield Phoenix. Fellow Sheffrec CC junior Will Glover just edged out Andrew Robinson, Dinnington RC to complete the final podium position. Following Robinson in 5th was Rutland Velo rider, Rowland Clark from Leigh Holmes, GB Fire Service, 6th. Local rider, Alan Dawson, Sheffield 220 City Road RT came 7th with James Headley Smith, Sleaford Wheelers, Nick Downham, Sheffrec CC and Edward Farnell, Manchester Wheelers rounding off the top 10.

The Ladies winner was Frances White riding for the University of Manchester with Phoebe Sneddon, Inverse RT / Cycleclaim.co.uk placing second after soldiering on to finish in her first ever road race.

Well done to all the riders who supported the event. The Chief Commissaire, Julie Rodman praised the riders on their level of safe riding and also the marshals for keeping the roads safe for the duration of the event. Event organiser, Marc Etches of Sheffrec CC would like to pass their thanks to Craig Lynch and his team at the Fox & Goose Public House, Wigley for providing us with a first class venue to base our event at.
