Imperial Winter Series Race 9

Posted January 26, 2010; Results, report & photos by Imperial RT

Saturday saw an increased entry for all categories partly due no doubt to the improved weather situation and with the road season getting ever closer.

The 3rd and 4th cat races followed their usual familiar pattern with the groups staying together. The main highlight of the 4th cat race was performed by Piers Curle (Exiles) who left the comfort of the main group to catch the 3rd cat group, although to his credit he rode 25m off the back and gained no advantage. This gave him a very creditable win with second place going to a bemused Tom Bell (Twickenham CC) who won the sprint comfortably not realising a rider was ahead!

In the finish of the 3rd category race, again it was very tight for the first three places with Ed Rose (Progression Fitness) holding off Ben Moores (Norwood Paragon CC) and last weeks 4th cat winner Jacek Reder. It was good to see one of the Moores family back in action!

Primes were again supplied by PurnaSports.com and won by Jon Lewis (Charlotteville CC) 3rd cat and Nicholas Hutchings (C.S. Grupetto) 4th cat.  These have been welcomed by the riders and provided a little added interest mid race; the organisers are indebted to Stuart Stow (who rides in the 3rd cat race) for his generosity.

In the E/1/23/ race it was action from the start, with several riders in their new season’s kit and bikes, notably Sigma Sport and Cycles Dauphin. We saw a first appearance from Jerone Walters and Wouter Sybrandy, who joined their teammate and this year’s Winter Series sensation Phill Sykes (Sigma Sport).

As usual Sykes was the most active and started the move to be joined by Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) and Sybrandy who last year won his first Premier Calendar race. The main group seemed quite happy for them to ride away and have their own race with Walters and Steve Golla working to keep the main group at a safe distance behind.

It was refreshing to see Youth rider Jon Dibben mixing it with the Sigma men.  The Prime winner was Daniel McCulloch, who was in the mix initially but dropped back and by this time after 20km, the break was well on its way to catching and passing the main group.  It was a delight to see the break working in harmony until Sykes pushed even harder and started to break it up but was pulled back by Dibben in spite of the help from team mate Sybrandy.

The group were eventually lapped and let the leaders pass.

With 300m to go, and with the extra help of Walters, Team Sigma Sport made it virtually impossible for Dibben (riding his under 16 gears) to take the lead.  Dibben is another young man to watch for this season with his new sponsor Hargroves Cycles giving him the backing he needs. There will be slight dip in the Sigma efforts next week as the Sigma Team head off to mountainous Wales for their pre-season training camp. They have now established themselves as the team to beat in southern England and perhaps in the Premier Calendar events.
