Big Win For Brad Down-Under

Posted: 17 October 2009

Bradley Wiggins has produced the biggest Road win of his career with victory in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in Australia.

The six-stage race is by some distance the biggest stage race win of his career: he took wins in Luxembourg and Majorca whilst still a development rider within the GB setup, but since turning pro, victories have been relatively rare.

However, the 2009 season has seen a dramatic development in his intent and delivery as a road rider, with an impressive Giro d'Italia followed by a remarkable Tour de France, where he climbed with a new authority and confidence and finished fourth overall, matching Robert Millar's best ever finish in the race by a British rider.

In the Sun Tour, Wiggins had kept himself in contention throughout, alongside team-mate Chris Sutton, whom he assisted in the run in to the sprint finishes. Then, in the fifth stage, a short time trial of just 10km, he turned on the style, winning by 14 seconds from another team-mate, Sven Tuft, and putting half a minute or more into the rest of the field.

That put him in the leader's jersey and a careful final stage, in Melbourne, saw the double Olympic Individual Pursuit champion hang on comfortably to take the overall win from team-mate, Chris Sutton.
