Time Trialling in Fife (Scotland)

Initially the events were confined to Fife CA clubs but with insurance issues the events were opened up to all British Cycling members and day members. Following the death of Fred Carratt during an event in 2005, a trophy in his honour was presented to the Fife CA for the winner of the Fife Clubs series. The first winner of this trophy was Fred’s son George who won the series in 2006. Other previous winners of the series are Alastair Speed, Barry Duncan, Brian Sproul & Alan Mill.

The series consists of 22 time trial events run over a variety of distances and types from a 1 mile straight out sprint event, a few 5, 10 & 25 mile tt’s, hilly tt’s, hill climbs and one two man team tt. This year points were awarded with 20 points to the winner of each round down to 1 point for 20th place and also 1 point to all finishers. In line with the initial aim of the series, each individual’s points total is multiplied by the number of events ridden up to a maximum of 3 less than the total available. This allows people to miss up to 3 rounds for holiday’s etc. Riders helping at an event, either as an official or marshal were also awarded 1 point to count as a ride.

The events are organised by most of the Fife CA member clubs on a rotational basis, with each club organising 2 or 3 events. Entry is on the line only, to simplify things for the organisers, although this can make setting out the field a bit of a panic. To provide more interest in the series, the riders were split into 4 leagues, the A league being for riders quicker than 23 minutes for 10 miles on last years times. The B league was for riders between 23 – 25 minutes, C league for riders between 25 – 27 minutes, and finally the D league for riders 27 minutes and over.

The first few rounds were causing problems with the organisers who, due to lighting up times, had a restricted field of 45 entrants. Prior to the running of the series numbers were often in single figures. 2008 winner Allan Mill started his defence of the series in the first 5 mile event, however a lowly 13th position wasn’t the best of starts and Allan was not seen again. Steve Nutley won the first event and was never to lose his lead, one event mid-season he didn’t win was the picturesque Loch Leven Circuit. This annual trophy event of 13 miles, around as you would guess Loch Leven, was won by Mark Atkinson, Sandy Wallace Cycles.

During Event 9, an accident involving Ali McGill, Sandy Wallace Cycles required two first aiders and a doctor to keep Ali alive until the emergency services could airlift Ali to hospital. Ali is still in hospital although he is making good progress, everyone involved in the series wishes Ali all the best with his continuing rehabilitation. Subsequently this event was declared void.

Ricky Hunter, Perth United was another to take Nutley’s scalp in the series and taking another win when Steve was on holiday duties. Dave Muir missed a few rounds and was starting to slip down the rankings but came back with a win and a few top placings to secure 2nd in the overall series. The 6 foot plus giant Nutley didn’t get it his way in the end of season hill climbs recording his lowest placing’s in both hill climbs. Winners were Philip Brown, Velo Ecosse and Gordon McBride, Sandy Wallace Cycles.

Into the final event and although most overall positions were secure, 3rd place overall and winner of the B league was still being contested. Alan Solway, Kennoway Raod Club and graham Barclay, Team Leslie Bike Shop/Right Move Windows were battling it out. In the end Solway did enough to fend of Barclay. Paul Gallagher almost managed to beat team mate Nutley, with both recording the same time to tie in 1st place.

Youngest rider in the series was Fife Century’s Gavin Laffoley, Grandson of Archie Speed, who had to wait until his 12th birthday in April before riding in the series and therefore missing the first few events. Gavin finished in 34th place overall and was 4th in the D League. The series also incorporated a veterans standard league, which gave the coordinator Sandy Wallace a few headaches I’m sure. Winner of the league was again Steve Nutley from the youthful Alan Solway with youngster Dave Muir in 3rd place.

In total 142 riders rode the series at various times throughout the season, and the average field was 32 riders. Thanks to all the Organisers, timekeepers, commissaries and Marshals who helped out at the events, and made the series so successful. A special thanks to Archie Speed who put out the warning signs at most of the events and to Hamish Dempsey and Bill Suttie who marshalled at most events.
