Great Britain collected its first points in both the juniors and under 23 UCI Nations’ Cup competitions respectively after the weekend’s racing.
In the UCI juniors Nations’ Cup, Great Britain are placed second with 25 points after their first outing in the series at Paris-Roubaix Juniors, eight points behind leaders Belgium.
British Cycling Olympic Development Programme athlete Tao Geoghegan Hart’s excellent third-place at the velodrome finish in Roubaix earned 15 points whilst Oliver Wood’s sixth position added a further 10 points.
In the under 23 competition, Olympic Academy Programme athlete Owain Doull’s thirteenth place at the Tour of Flanders under 23 race on a luckless day for Great Britain resulted in three points and eleventh overall with Germany on top with 20 points.
Both competitions earn places for September’s UCI Road World Championships in Florence, Italy, although changes have been made by the UCI regarding qualification for under 23 men’s place.
In the junior men’s race, like in 2012, the top 10 nations in the UCI juniors’ Nations Cup as of the August 15 2013 qualify 12 riders (of whom six can ride), the next five nations qualify 10 riders (of whom five can ride) and the next five nations eight riders (of whom four to ride).
Non-ranked nations can enter six riders (three to start) whilst the organising nation receive 10 places with five riders to start.
Spots for the under 23 men’s race in Tuscany will be decided by a new qualifying system. The first 27 nations in the UCI Europe Tour (based only on classified under 23 men riders) as of 15 August 2013 will qualify for the race.
Nations ranked first to 15th may register 10 riders (five can start), those 16th to 20th can register eight riders (four can start) and 21st to 27th positions may register six riders (three can start).
The UCI under 23 Nations’ Cup offers an additional place in the under 23 race at the road world championships to the top five nations, with a maximum of six starters permitted for any nation.
Next for Great Britain in the under 23 series is Wednesday’s La Côte Picarde in France whilst Great Britain’s junior riders will contest the three-day Tour of Istria starting on the 19 April.
