Great Britain’s David Stone successfully defended his Paralympic road title in the mixed T1-2 road race with a lone breakaway.
Stone went solo with 3km to go as Italy’s Giorgio Farroni was unable to stay with him, the Briton eventually taking gold by seven seconds, completing the 24km course in 45:17.
The pair was set to battle for and silver at the 16km mark having attacked from the peloton early on in the race. David Vondracek of the Czech Republic was three minutes 17 seconds behind in third.
For 31-year-old Stone, it is a third Paralympic gold having won a double in Beijing – and his second medal in London having won bronze in the mixed T 1-2 time trial.
Briton Stone said: "I made my move, but the Italian (Farroni) stayed with me. It was so hard.
"It makes it better to win today because it was so disappointing not winning in the time-trial.
"Compared to Beijing, the competition was so much better, it's good. It pushes me. It makes it a much better sport."
WOMEN'S INDIVIDUAL B ROAD RACE
Lora Turnham and Fiona Duncan missed out on the sprint for a bronze medal by four seconds, eventually finishing eighth.
The Canadian pairing of Lyne Bessette and Robbi Weldon, and the Spanish duo of Josefa Benitez and Maria Noriega wrapped up gold and silver medals, over four minutes clear of the chasing bunch.
The race for bronze originally contained seven nations - of which Great Britain was one - but only five contested the sprint for the medal, eventually won by the Dutch pairing.
