Former nine-time national champion and international pro-cyclist Roger Hammond has been confirmed as a keynote speaker for , British Cycling’s first annual coaching conference.
Taking place at the University of Birmingham on 19 May, the event will provide a unique opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the significant progress made in UK coaching since the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Roger Hammond will draw on his vast experience as an elite rider garnered from a decade long career to add to an international line-up of high-profile experts across key areas of participation and performance.
“It really is exciting to be a part of Coaching 2012,” Roger said of his upcoming appearance. “While coaching methods and practices have developed massively throughout my career, one thing that hasn’t changed is the unique ability of a coach to get the best out of an athlete.
“Events like this are integral to a coach's development and I hope by sharing my perspective as a professional rider that the unique relationship can be further understood and exploited. Most of all, I am looking forward to meeting like minded people and assisting their development in any way I can.”
Adding his presence to a list which already includes the likes of Asker Jeukendrup, (Global Senior Director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute), Prof. Kathleen Armour, (Professor of Education and Sport, University of Birmingham) and Jayne Ellis, (Senior Paralympic Talent ID Scientist with the UK Sport Talent Team, English Institute of Sport), ensures Coaching 2012 will be a unique occasion for coaches across the sporting spectrum.
“Coaching 2012 is shaping up to be an incredible day of discussion and insight for active coaches,” according to Andrew Gillott, Coaching and Education Manager at British Cycling.
“Roger has been a dominant presence on the domestic and international road racing scene for many years and his attendance at University of Birmingham will, without doubt, provide a unique insight in to his life as a pro athlete working with coaches at the highest level.
“The Conference schedule has been designed to reflect two key areas of participation and performance and we feel Roger’s ability to detail his progression through the ranks will appeal to coaches working across the performance spectrum.”
Roger Hammond retired at the end of the 2011 season after a high-profile career spent riding for pro teams such as Garmin-Cervelo, T Mobile and Discovery, where he rode alongside seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.
He was particularly notorious as a classics specialist following podium finishes at prestigious one day races such as Paris-Roubaix, Gent Wevelgem and Dwars Door Vlaanderen, while at a national level, Roger is one of Great Britain’s most successful cyclists ever, having won a total of nine national championships across the disciplines of road and cyclo-cross. He could have joined the pro peloton earlier in his career, but opted to finish his University education before taking to life as a full-time athlete.
