Chris Froome became only the fifth man in history to win the Tour de France four times with a sensational victory in France.

The Team Sky rider won the title for the third successive year after a dominant display across one of the most challenging courses in Le Tour history.

He cemented his place in history by crossing the line with his teammates on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, having enjoyed a well-earned glass of champagne on his approach to the city.

Yellow jersey

Froome wore the yellow jersey in 14 of the 21 stages at the 2017 Tour - taking it off fellow Team Sky rider Geraint Thomas who held it for the opening five stages.

He lost the jersey to Fabio Aru for two stages in the Pyranees before winning it back in Rodez on stage 14 and keeping hold of it all the way to Paris.

British Cycling's chief executive officer Julie Harrington was full of praise for Froome's accomplishments:

“What Chris Froome has achieved over the last few years is nothing short of phenomenal, and with this, his fourth Tour victory, he continues to write his name into British sporting history.

"The cycling community in this country and indeed the whole nation are rightly extremely proud of him."

It was a day of double celebration for British riders as Simon Yates secured the white jersey for the best young rider.

The Orica-Scott rider follows in the footsteps of brother Adam who won the title twelve months earlier.
