Mark Cavendish, Lizzie Deignan, Peter Kennaugh and Elinor Barker are just a few of the big names heading to the HSBC UK | National Road Championships in the Isle of Man this week with the ambition of becoming the 2017 national road champion.
As well as trying to get their hands on the coveted red, white and blue jersey, some of Britain’s best cycling talent will also be competing for brand new medals.
The new design, based on the spokes of a wheel, will be awarded to national champions across all cycling disciplines in 2017, and will be presented for the first time at the HSBC UK | National Road Championships.

The new medals are bigger and heavier than the previous version, with a 65mm diameter and are made from galvanized aluminium with an antique finish. The ribbon will also carry the national champions’ stripes.
British Cycling’s director of cycling, Jonny Clay, said: “It was important, in re-designing the medals, to make sure we created something worthy of national champion status, both in terms of look and feel.
“Becoming a British champion is one of the proudest moments in any rider’s career and it is only right that they have a medal that truly recognises the scale of their achievement.”
