The 2016 British Cycling National Road Championships start on Thursday 23 June with the time trials in Stockton-on-Tees.

The elite men’s, elite women’s and under-23 men’s titles will be decided with the winners earning the right to wear the British champion’s jersey.

Action starts at 1pm with the under-23 men on a course that starts and finishes in Stockton town centre.

Men’s time trial

Movistar’s Alex Dowsett will start as the favourite as he bids for a record fifth British time trial title.

Wins in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 - a run only disrupted by Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2014 - has seen Dowsett draw level with Stuart Dangerfield’s record.

But victory in Stockton would make the record the 27-year-old’s alone. 

Commonwealth Games champion Dowsett, though, faces tough competition in his quest for history. Team Wiggins’ Owain Doull, Steven Burke and Andy Tennant - all hoping to compete at the Rio Olympic Games - have time trial prowess.

Doull makes the step up from the under-23 competition having finished second to Scott Davies last year in Lincolnshire.     

Fortuneo-Vital Concept’s Dan McLay is one to watch, as is two-time under-23 winner Sam Harrison, of Team Wiggins.

Women’s time trial

The return of Emma Pooley to the championships, after her retirement in 2014, sees the 33-year-old go in search of a fourth British time trial title, after pulling on the champion’s jersey in 2009, 2010 and 2014.

In addition to honours, Pooley is eyeing up a spot at the Rio Olympic Games and a strong performance in Stockton could only boost her chances.

Pooley will be the second-to-last rider down the start ramp, with defending champion Hayley Simmonds the final rider to set a time after her stunning effort in 2015.

Simmonds shocked the field in Lincoln 12 months ago to take the title and the 27-year-old Unitedhealthcare Professional Cycling Team rider will have no intention of relinquishing her title without a battle.

Podium Ambition p/b Club La Santa’s Dame Sarah Storey was third in Lincoln and her time trial qualities should see her at the business end of the times on the 21.6-mile course. 

London Olympic Games champion Dani King, Liv-Plantur’s Molly Weaver, 2005 champion Julia Shaw and the returning Hannah Barnes of Canyon-SRAM are all capable of a place on the podium.

Under-23 time trial

Team Wiggins’ Scott Davies is targeting a third successive under-23 title, a feat that would take him to a record number of wins in the category.

Davies joined Alex Dowsett and Sam Harrison on two championships after his triumph at Cadwell Park in 2015.

But if three is to be the magic number, the 20-year-old will have to overcome a talented field in Stockton-on-Tees.

Last year’s bronze medallist Tao Geoghagen Hart, of Axeon Hagens Berman, is back and the burgeoning talent is continually improving, evidenced by his recent second place at the Course de la Paix race.  

100% me feature world points race champion Jon Dibben, with Ollie Wood, Gabz Cullaigh, Joe Holt, Joey Walker, Matt Bostock and Mark Stewart bolstering the competition.

One Pro Cycling’s Tom Baylis returns after just missing out on the podium with fourth 12 months ago, while James Shaw will look to build on his sixth place in 2015.

Under-23 men's time trial entry list

The course

Riders start and finish on the High Street in Stockton town centre on what is undoubtedly the technically challenging part of the 7.2-mile lap.

From the town centre, the route heads out up the A11135, A1130 and on to Queen Elizabeth Way, over the River Tees before turning back and heading towards Stockton town centre to complete the lap.

Elite women and under-23 men take on three laps totalling 21.6 miles, while the elite men complete four laps, for a total of 28.8 miles.
