New road world champion Lizzie Armitstead has already turned her attention to winning gold at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

The 26-year-old Briton took an astonishing victory on Saturday at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia to end her wait for a rainbow jersey on the road.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games champion, who won silver at the London 2012 Olympics, wants to go one better next year.

"That would surpass this if I could achieve that," Armitstead told Press Association Sport.

"That will be my focus now for the next 12 months. All in for Rio."

British champion Armitstead sprinted to victory ahead of Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen to cement her name in British cycling history.

She became the fourth British woman to win the road race world championships after Beryl Burton, Mandy Jones and Nicole Cooke.

"It's definitely an elite club," said Armitstead, who also won the UCI Women’s Road World Cup for a second successive time this year.

"There's a big tradition in British women's cycling. There's been a lot of champions before me and I'm sure there will be ahead of me."

The women’s road race at the Rio Olympic Games takes place on Sunday 7 August on a 130-kilometre course, starting and finishing at Flamengo Park.
