The Great Britain Cycling Team took three medals – one silver and two bronze – on the first day of the UCI Para-cycling Road Cup in Maniago, Italy on Friday.

Hannah Dines won silver in the T2 time trial, while Megan Giglia took bronze in the C3 time trial.

Stephen Bate, piloted by Adam Duggleby, added another bronze with a determined ride on the tadem in the B time trial.

For all four riders it was first medal at a world level.

“It was a good result for a first outcome,” Giglia said.

“I didn’t put any expectations on myself as I didn’t want too much pressure so to come third was beyond what I expected.”

Paralympic Academy Programme rider Giglia secured Britain’s first medal in scorching temperatures in north-east Italy.

The 30-year old completed the 12.5-kilometre course in 23:34.12, two minutes and 16 seconds back from winner Jamie Whitmore but importantly two seconds faster than Katie Toft to earn bronze.

“From now I just need to continue digging deep and start working on the areas that I need to improve on,” Giglia added.

“I’m looking forward to the road race, getting round those bends and we’ll see what happens.”

Hannah Dines then added silver in the T2 event, the 22-year-old carrying her form on the trike from the Brixia Para-cycling Cup, where she triumphed in both the road race and time trial.

Dines stopped the clock in 28:05.29 to edge out Marie-Eve Croteau for silver by less than three seconds as Jana Majunke won.

In the afternoon session, Bate and Duggleby completed a hat-trick for Britain in a gripping time trial that saw them collect bronze by just two-tenths of a second over 26.4km.

Their time of 33:56.23 edged out Polish duo Premyslaw Wegner and Artur Korc for a memorable moment for the British pairing.

“We could have gone better but we’ll take that for now,” Bate said.

“The prep of the whole team was excellent. The cooling strategies were great, we had recce’d the course thoroughly and the mechanics had our bike set up brilliantly and running unbelievably smoothly.

“We’re really happy with that.”

Lora Turnham and pilot Corrine Hall could not add to their extensive medal collection, the 2013 world time-trial champions fourth in the B tandem time trial.

Karen Darke also ended fourth, in the H3 event, over 28 seconds adrift of third-place as Renata Kaluza won gold.

Liz Saul was unfortunate to miss out on a medal in the C4 time trial, just four-hundredths of a second behind third-place Jenny Narcisi.

Simon Price was seventh in C2 time trial as Paralympic Development Programme rider Louis Rolfe showed his potential in eighth.

In the C4 event, Jaco van Gass was ninth. Jon Gildea was seventh in the C5 discipline and Brian Alldis 18th in the H4 time trial.

David Smith gave an encouraging performance for 16th in the C3 event, while Josie Pearson took third on her world cup debut in the H3 classification but was denied a medal as she finished outside of the time limit.

“It was a bit of a mixed bag today," Great Britain Cycling Team para-cycling road coach Paul Dring said.

"Across the board I think we underperformed slightly. The riders executed the rides they wanted to do but the results haven’t quite been there today. I think the course and the heat might have played a part.

"There were positives though. Steve and Adam had a fantastic ride. They showed us what we know they’re capable of which was really encouraging.

"Hannah obviously had a fantastic result and she’ll be over the moon with that. Liz (Saul) can be pleased with her ride despite just missing out on a medal. Megan performed well to get bronze. I think it reflects where we are at this stage of the season.

"We’ve been up against some of the best competition in the world today, and we just need to make sure we learn from this, go into the next few days and raise our level a bit really.”

The event continues on Saturday with the first of two days of road races.
