Lawless impresses in Jayco Herald Sun Tour prologue

Chris Lawless delivered a strong ride for 23rd as the Great Britain Cycling Team got their 2015 Jayco Herald Sun Tour underway with a short prologue in Melbourne.

The 19-year-old British Cycling Olympic Academy Programme athlete completed the flat 2.1-kilometre course in two minutes and 31 seconds to place him third overall in the under-23 general classification.

Lawless was the second rider to start his effort out of Federation Square and briefly sat in the hot seat having laid down an early marker when he crossed the line in Queensbridge Square.

Of the rest of the Great Britain Cycling Team, Gabriel Cullaigh was 48th, British under-23 time trial champion Scott Davies 54th, Jake Kelly 59th, Grant Ferguson 72nd and Josh Edmundson 89th.

Drapac Professional Cycling’s William Clarke won in a time of two minutes and thirty-five seconds to take the initiative in the 62nd edition of Australia’s oldest stage race.

The five-day race continues on Thursday with a 146.2-kilometre journey from Mountt Macedon to Bendigo.
