British Cycling's Breeze women's cycling programme is closing its radical women month by celebrating some of the pioneers of women's cycling, from the Suffragettes who used bicycles to spread the word about their Votes for Women campaign, to those who helped develop women's cycling as a sport.

Throughout the decades, the bicycle has come to be seen as a symbol for female liberation. There are many women whose stories we haven't been able to include. But we salute their legacy.

In the UK today, three times more men than women ride bikes for fun. British Cycling's Breeze network aims to change that. Breeze is the single biggest initiative aimed at increasing participation in women's cycling – ever. You can show your support for our Closing the Cycling Gap campaign by liking the Facebook page.
