Elinor Barker helps Great Britian Cycling Team end on a high by becoming World Champion in the points race after a difficult week at the UCI Track World Championships in Berlin.

It's been a tough week for the GB squad with crashes at key moments, but Barker added to her silver medal in the team pursuit with a perfectly executed win in the points race, on no less than St David's Day.

With the Track World Championships being the final dress rehearsal for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, strong performances will only cement her chances of making the selection. Throughout the week, Barker has looked good. Although she was part of the quartet that missed out to USA in the team pursuit early in the week, Barker's performance showed there was more to come.

The Welsh rider also competed in the madison with Neah Evans, and although they didn't medal it was another strong performance. So when the points race rolled around on the final day, Welsh and GB supporters were in expectant mood.

The race started relatively quietly for Barker, who collected some points from the early sprints and took a lap with a group of riders, including the medal favourites. However, it was a late solo attack which saw Barker gain an additional lap, leaving no time for her rivals to catch her, which meant she finished the race on 50 points while rivals Jennifer Valente of USA finished second with 34 points and Norway’s Anita Stenberg in third with 33 points.

Speaking of her world championship title, Barker said: ““It always feels pretty good to be honest. It’s not irrelevant that it’s not an Olympic event, but it doesn’t make it feel any less incredible. I knew that I had good legs yesterday (in the Madison), so I’m glad that I was able to prove that today.”
