Martyn Parr is not only a key part of the coaching team at Dragon Riders BMX but also goes above and beyond his coaching responsibilities in a variety of other roles within the club.

Martyn is a Level 2 BMX coach and delivers coaching sessions every week at the purpose built BMX track in North Wales.

He is usually on hand to offer his support and advice to riders at the club’s weekly open sessions. The club offers a coaching provision for all ages and abilities, developing riders from the BMX basics in the car park to the skills needed to fly high over the great BMX track, with coaching for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders. It’s not just the kids that are encouraged to ride, plenty of parents have also been inspired to put on a helmet and pads and have a go!

The young riders Martyn coaches explained to us how he ‘always explains things in an easy way’ and how he ensures the ‘coaching is fun and helps you learn a lot of new skills’.

It is clear that Martyn’s passion and enthusiasm for the sport comes across in his coaching. One rider explained ‘Martyn helps people learn how to go fast on a BMX, there is never any standing around, we are always on the go which I love’.

Martyn is keen to encourage his riders to understand the physical aspects of the sport, and by using testing and benchmarking has been able to set goals and develop their skills and fitness.

Martyn is not only a coach but a driving force to provide opportunities for the riders to put all their skills into practice and race. This has included organising trips to try out new tracks, and supporting races all over the UK. The club has just concluded the hugely successful annual Winter Series, with Martyn taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies, commentating and encouraging riders, all until the keen competitor makes a dash for the start gate for his moto!

Martyn also dedicates his own time to support with the maintenance and development of the track, something that he and his fellow club volunteers are passionate about doing. As a group they have rejuvenated the BMX site and also made changes to the track to continue to test the skills of the riders and develop the club.
