The second round of our 2019 Welsh Cyclo-cross league headed to the Royal Welsh Showground on what was another great day of action.
On a sprawling course situated within the famous showground, there was action galore as riders battled for points which could be crucial come the end of the series.
Like the previous week it was the enthusiastic youngsters which kicked off proceedings – in the under-6 girls race it was Tarynn Perry who was victorious ahead of Libby Elias (Gower Riders) and Daisy Duffield (Whitchurch CC). In the boys race Macsen Harris (Abergavenny Road Club) followed up his victory from last week by pipping Oscar Iveson and Theo Ryland (The Bulls) to first place.
Next to take to the course was the under-8's and in the girl’s race, Cadi Emmerson produced an impressive performance to take the victory and then Isaac McAdie (Gower Riders) took victory in close boys race finishing ahead of Freddie Roberts (Hafren CC) and Efan Lewis (The Bulls).
In under-10's category Gower Riders took an impressive clean sweep in the girl’s race as Lara Elias, Isobel Davies and Katie Evans claimed the three steps on the podium. For the boys it was Cameron Reeves (Abergavenny Road Club) who produced a strong performance to take victory.
By the time the under-12 race rolled around, the day was in full swing and Mabli Phillips (Maindy Flyers Youth CC) wowed the spectators with a skilful performance finishing ahead of Imogen McAdie and Kitty Walton (Gower Riders).
In the boy’s race, it was another good battle between Finlay Storrie (Maindy Flyers Youth CC) and Tomos Davies (Gower Riders) as they looked to claim the top place on the podium. In the end it was Storrie who prevailed with Alex Carson (Dyffryn Conwy) close behind in third.
Youth riders put on a royal show in Builth
With the culmination of younger categories it was the turn of the youth riders to take to the course and they didn’t disappoint.
In the under-14 boy’s race Alfie Davies (A Cycling) and Joshua Jackson (The MI Racing Academy) produced an epic battle as they went wheel-to-wheel for the victory. In the end it was Davies who won by two seconds. While Tom Carson (Dyffryn Conwy) completed the podium in third.
In the girls race Anwen Nesham (Cardiff JIF) produced some impressive lap times to finish ahead of Imogen Morris (Gower Riders) and Jessica Hoskins (Cardiff JIF).
For Griff Lewis (Ystwyth Cycling Club) it was a good day at the office as he won the under-16 boy’s ahead Ioan Oldfield (Marsh Tracks Racing – Trek) and Tom James (Dyffryn Conwy). For Awen Roberts who has had an impressive season on the road she continued that form by taking victory on a different kind of terrain.
Like last week, there was another women’s only race across multiple categories which was again hotly contested. In the senior women Ruby Miller continued her good form by taking victory. In other categories Clare Hoskins was victorious in the vet 50 race, while Claire Bowen won the vet 40 race.
The final races of the day saw the turn of the men’s categories. In the senior men’s race Steven James soloed away to victory ahead of Craig Rogers and Ben Nott.
Elsewhere in other categories it was William Truelove, Matthew Lewis, Timothy Davies and Andy Furman who won their respective races.
