It was another successful Junior World Track Championships for the Welsh riders as Team GB finished second to Germany in the overall medal table.

The team, included Welsh representation with the likes of Ella Barnwell, Emma Finucane, Elynor Backstedt, Eluned King, Zach Bridges and Rhys Thomas all involved.

Along with the successes of the female riders, Thomas also claimed a bronze in the team sprint.

Barnwell came away with three bronze medals in the scratch race, omnium and the team pursuit alongside Backstedt, King and Sophie Lewis.

Reflecting on her scratch race performance, Barnwell said: “The scratch was one of the key races of the year for me.

“It was a very aggressive ride as a few nations went off the front and it was down to myself to bring them back. But in the end I had the legs to bag a bronze. I was happy with my ride as it was my first individual word championship medal,” Barnwell continued.

Speaking about the overall experience, Barnwell said: “I was amazed by my junior world championship because I was able to medal in all three of my events and come out strong.

“To get a world championship medal is a feeling I cannot explain, it means so much to me. The win was the dream but I wasn’t quite there yet but I’m still so happy,” she said.

As for Finucane, she followed up her impressive performance in the European Junior Track Championships by taking bronze medals in the sprint and the 500m TT.

“Going from the Euros to the world championships was a step up in competition. Although, after the European championships I did put pressure on myself and as the week went on I claimed two bronze medals which amazed me as the competition was very hard,” Finucane explained.

“I got a PB in all the timed events which I was so pleased about, but on top of that top to receive medals made me realise I am amongst the best in the world as a first year. It shows that hard work does pay off,” continued Finucane.

Elynor was looking to replicate her European championship form heading into the world championships in Frankfurt, and in the end it proved to be a successful week as she took home two silver medals in the Madison and the individual pursuit, a then bronze in the team pursuit.

“The overall experience was so cool but I was a lot more nervous for this year’s champs than I have been before especially after Europeans, so I learned a lot about how to manage that throughout the week,” said Backstedt.

“Each race was a different kind of experience but all equally incredible and being able to come away with medals in every event that I started in was just amazing and so much more than I had expected,” continued Backstedt.
