Welsh Cycling Young Ambassadors Workshop at Pembrey Country Park

Saturday 16th Feb 2019

Welsh Cycling Young Ambassadors (WCYA) met for their second group meeting at Pembrey Country Park over the weekend.

WCYA’s become experts on how to use #100Hours+

With 13 WCYA’s in attendance, the day kicked off with a workshop around Welsh Cycling’s new Volunteer Recognition Scheme (#100Hours+), looking at how to download, use & log their volunteering hours using the App ‘Vol Hours’.

All of the Young Ambassadors (YAs) have an account set up and have logged their first day of hours, very exciting!

The YA’s will now take this back into their clubs to ensure all club volunteers are logging their hours and gaining the recognition they deserve.

Team Building and Communications

The second session of the day focussed on team building and communication.

The YA’s were tasked with building a tall structure as a team, strong enough to hold a marshmallow.  Yep...you heard right, a marshmallow!  Tasked and equipped with Spaghetti (pasta) & blue tack, the YA's set upon their task eager with enthusiasm, a very entertaining activity for all involved but it also helped our WCYA’s consider how to communicate effectively with other team mates and also how to effectively delegate roles.

Treasure Hunt

To finish of the morning session all YA’s were tasked with a treasure hunt around Pembrey Country Park Ski Centre, which even included finding Geraint Thomas!

Closed Road Circuit

The afternoon session was led by Welsh Cycling Go-Ride Coach West region Becky Peart. Typically, the good old Welsh weather didn't disappoint as the moment our YA’s went outside to the Closed Road Circuit it began to rain heavily.

It didn't stop the enthusiasm of the YA's though and they went on to learn all about the fundamentals of coaching.

Each of the groups led their own warm-ups extremely well, a very necessary requirement given the weather at this time, Da Iawn Pawb!

Fun and Games

To end the day all YA’s were tasked with fun and games to finish, it involved skills and technical considerations as one of the races was restricted by not being allowed to pedal.

A Message from our Volunteer Coordinator

Beth Nesham, Welsh Cycling Volunteer Coordinator said "Overall the WCYA’s were extremely enthusiastic and threw themselves into the day with 100% effort. A massive thank you to Becky Peart for helping the team day and to all parents for bringing the YA’s along to the meeting.  A special shout out to our Bulls representative, Perry who travelled over two hours to be in attendance".

"We look forward to seeing all your hard work over the next few weeks on your clubs social media pages and also seeing all your voluntary hours on our new app".
