Just hours after he crossed the finishing line in Paris, fans in his home city were honouring him

It was one of Wales' biggest sporting triumphs so fans of Geraint Thomas were keen to mark his historic Tour de France win.

And they didn't waste any time as just hours after he had crossed the finishing line in Paris, cyclists in his home city of Cardiff were gearing up for a bike challenge of their own, organised by Steve Gabriel of Cardiff Social Cycling.

They grabbed their cycles for a ride which started outside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay and crossed the barrage and headed up the Taff Trail to Cardiff Castle during the six-mile celebratory route.

Fans of all ages competed and, just like their sporting hero, most of them were wearing yellow jerseys.

Chief executive Anne Adams-King said: “There has been an outstanding buzz across not only the cycling community in Wales; but everyone in Wales – who have really come together to support Geraint all the way.

“The celebratory ride is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Wales, and Geraint’s hometown of Cardiff to unite together, wear yellow and show their pride for being Welsh.

“We are overjoyed with Geraint’s achievements over the last three weeks and look forward to watching him officially secure victory as the first welsh man ever to win the Tour de France.

“An unbelievable moment not only for cycling, but for sport in Wales."
