Welsh Cycling are holding an open testing day for youth cyclists in a bid to find the next generation of track cycling sprinters.

The Welsh Cycling Sprint Academy programme has visited more than 50 secondary schools across Wales this autumn. More than 4,000 pupils have taken part in testing to date, to see if they have the potential to be the next Becky James or Lewis Oliva.

Ian Jenkins, Youth Programme Lead said: “We trialled the Sprint Academy Programme in 2015, where we tested 2000 pupils in South East Wales. The first Sprint Academy athletes had their first competition experience at the British Cycling Youth and Junior Track Championships in the Summer, and now we are looking to extend the programme.

This year we have tested in schools across Wales, and are now inviting young people to the Wales National Velodrome who want to take on the challenge and test their potential to become a world-class track sprinter.”

Welsh Cycling is now inviting young athletes aged 13 – 15 (born in 2001 or 2002) to an open Sprint Academy Testing Day at Wales National Velodrome, Newport on Wednesday 21 December.

You will take part in two peak power sprints on static bikes and two vertical jump tests. Height and weight measurements will be taken, and a video presentation on track sprinting will be shared by our Sprint Academy team. The testing experience will take approximately 30 minutes, and at this stage does not involve cycling on the velodrome.
