What kind of riding do you do?
Mostly personal training to build fitness for sportives

What do you enjoy most about cycling?
The sheer freedom to exercise without knackering my knees, exhilaration of experiencing a ‘oneness’ with a sleek piece of machinery, measuring steady improvements in speed and durability, travelling through beautiful countryside, meeting other cyclists and lately, vicarious pleasure that my wife is now started cycling and her regular refrain ‘I LOVE my bike’, and of course the fun of a sportive.

What’s your favourite ride?
The ride I do early morning several times a week from home along an excellent cycleway to Dorking, up Box Hill and round Headley back to Leatherhead. The surface is generally very good and the reward of a brief glimpse down from Box Hill gives the day a very good start.

What’s your top cycling tip to share?
I hardly feel qualified to give tips except the one I gave to my wife to live on the gears and work to get the cadence gear changes right. Other than that, politeness and courtesy to drivers, especially those who slow down behind (a bit unnecessarily so sometimes, but never mind); a hand gesture of thanks which they, as well as anyone behind them, will note goes a long way.

If you had a tandem, who would you like to ride it with?
Depends whether I am in front or behind. Naturally, my wife comes top of the list followed by Helen Skelton (simply because she would be good company and would certainly pull her weight!)
