Entry for this year's Sleepless in the Saddle 24 hour mountain bike enduro is still open. This is the sister event to Mountain Mayhem and runs on the same basic principles - riders compete over an off-road lap of some 8 miles in teams of 2, same sex teams of 4 and mixed teams of 5. There's also a solo category for the brave and tough.

VIDEO OF THE 2011 EVENT

Sleepless is a great favourite of ours at British Cycling and we'll once again be running a staff team in what is perhaps the friendliest, most chilled event of the year.

Lap length is a little shorter than Mayhem, which for newcomers to 24 hour racing makes Sleepless a great place to start your team enduro career.

There's no experience quite like riding in a team at a 24 hour enduro - it's a brilliant way to spend time with your riding mates and an equally good way to make new friends in the bonding environment of shared suffering, achievement and enjoyment.

The Catton Park (near Burton-on-Trent) venue is beautiful, quiet and safe, so families and friends can come along and support you whilst enjoying the camping, BBQs etc. Camping is free for competitors/supporters.

Of course, if it gets wet, the course can cut up, so don't get caught out like a lot of riders at Mayhem did back in June - buy yourself some 1.5 or 1.7 inch wide mud tyres and matching tubes and stuff them in the boot just in case, alongside a bottle of super-wet chainlube, a bucket and a stiff brush (the bike wash is great but it does get very "popular" if it rains).

Bring all your cycling kit with you and give your bike an extra-special prep.
