Whilst most people were enjoying a relaxing bank holiday weekend a hardy group of mountain bikers attended the Boggart Hole Clough Go-MTB event on Sunday 28 August.
Jason Tonge (Lancashire Road Club) on his way to victory
Youth riders kick started the racing with the U12s competing on a shortened but hilly loop. Aiden Lawrence (Team B Global) comfortably took first place with Gloria Eden (Eastlands Velo) the first female rider.
The juvenile and youth riders raced the full 4km loop containing two steep climbs and plenty of tricky single track. Joe Booth and brother Jack took first in those categories.
With the wind picking up the senior riders set off with a good hour of racing ahead of them. Jason Tonge (Lancashire Road Club) quickly split the field with an injection of pace from the line. His lead continued to extend and victory never looked in doubt with Tonge managing to go a lap ahead 40 minutes into racing.
Experienced Mark O'Connell (MK Cycles) was left chasing the leader alone with Dean Harwood just over a minute behind in third place after five laps of the increasingly muddy circuit.
Meanwhile Mark Warrender and Richard Barrett had a battle of their own for fourth and fifth place. Barrett, who is currently training for the upcoming cyclo-cross season, initially pulled away but Warrender worked hard to reel him in and then gained a 30 second advantage. Whilst the gap seemed close the undulating course had taken its toll and Warender took fourth place with Barrett in fifth.
Credit should also be given to first time racer Chris Fielding who put a huge effort in to gaining sixth place.
