Mountian Mayhem Launch Racing For Under-18s

Posted June 3 2011

Junior riders will get the chance to race their own Mountain Mayhem in 2011, as organisers have teamed up with British Cycling to promote JNR 24@24.

Entry to Britain's biggest 24 hour mountain bike race has usually been restricted to those over 18 years of age, but with JNR 24@24, under-aged riders wanting a taste of the main event have their first chance.

On the weekend of June 18th and 19th and separate to the main 24 hour course, the event will be run on a short 3km cross country circuit on the hillside adjacent to the main field. But don't let the short lap fool you - there will be some hard climbing, woodland doubletrack, technical singletrack and sweeping descents. After a running Le Mans style start riders will collect their bikes and aim to complete a total of 24 kilometres.

The race will be open to both male and females in the junior category; if you were born in 1993 or 1994 then you are eligible to enter. The winner will be the first rider to complete the 24km distance. The race will conclude when the winning rider crosses the line and riders still out on course will then complete the lap they are on.

There is a generous array of prizes on offer; trophies for first place with prizes for the top three male and female riders. Plus there will be a number of random spot prizes and all riders that enter will receive a Science in Sport goody bag when they sign on.

The cost to enter is £10. If you wish to enter this event then entry forms and parental consent forms can be found on the main event web site www.osmountainmayhem.co.uk on the entry page. Postal entries must be received by 15th June 2011, alternatively entry on the day will also be available at the British Cycling stand.

The provisional programme of activity is as follows:
• Sign on (at the British Cycling stand)5.00 - 6.00pm
• Course open for practice 6.00 - 6.45pm
• Race start 7.00pm
• Race finish 8.30pm (approx)
• Prize presentation 9.00pm (approx) in the main arena

The aim of this race is to give junior riders (and not just those that have raced previously) the opportunity to get involved in the sport and at the event, give them a flavour of the venue and hopefully encourage them to come back in future years to race the full event. So if you were just coming to watch and support Mum or Dad in the main race, make sure you pack your bike as well and come and have a go - see you on the start line!

On the Saturday morning , before the start of the main 24hour race, British Cycling Go Ride will be staging Mini Mayhem for children under 16. Entry fee is £1 with sign on between 8.00 - 8.30 and riding 8.30 - 10.30
