Wiggle Enduro 6

Riders lining up for the short run which sets the event in motion

Introduction

The 2009 Wiggle Enduro 6 banished at one stroke all the memories of the soggy enduros of 2009 with a day of perfect cycling weather - gentle breezes, warm sunshine and a total absence of rain. Add that to some seriously dry and therefore fast trails and you had a recipie for happy, smiling riders and an equally happy looking Pat Adams - the legendary race organiser was hit worse than most by the excess of H2O in 2008 and it was great to see him shaking hands with dust-streaked riders at the end of a highly successful event.

From a rider's point of view, Catton Park was in splendid condition, with the wooded singletrack both smooth and rapid. The grass sections were slick and slippery, polished to a sheen by the passage of hundreds of wheels. Some new weatherproof singletrack had been prepared in the opening woodland section and although not called upon to resist any rain, it added another dimension to the trails on show. And the long drags at the back of the course were rippled with dried tractor tracks, making them just that bit tougher than they looked.

No Enduro 6 report would be complete without the bluebell shots!

Race Report

Enduro 6 has always been seen as the traditional start to enduro riding in the British mountain bike calendar, but now as the sport continues flourish there seems no beginning or end. However Enduro 6 continues to attract a loyal following and in its eighth year packed a full house of riders eager to experience the 'Pat' factor. As the clock edged ever forward to the start time, riders got on with the hustle and bustle of sorting out their pit areas, comparing course notes and discussing tactics, before heading to the start line ready to take on the 6 hour blast round the dry dusty trails. The event operates a 'Parc Ferm' system where once the race begins riders are 'locked' into the pit area, either waiting to swap with their race partner, or out riding on the course. So everything plus the kitchen sink is hauled into each pit, ready for every eventuality.

Over 500 hundred riders had signed up to take on the challenge either solo or in pairs and at the stroke of 10 the race was on, with the first leg a quick jog round the park, sorting the men from the boys! The air was awash with olfactory delights of wild garlic and of course that truly iconic British spring flower, the bluebell: and now over the fast 5-mile course, they danced under the surge of numerous frantic pedal strokes. The riders were blessed with stunning spring weather along with trails designed to tantalise and delight while providing a sustainable and enjoyable event, regardless of ability.

In the elite solo men's race, Lee Williams keen to impress his new sponsors who also happen to sponsor the race, was off like a scalded cat. His main intention, as he told me later, was to make a race out of it. This for Williams meant going for it from the start to see who would hang on. It was a brave plan that at first was right on track??until a puncture but him on a back foot. Racing to the pits to change tyres he could only watch as his chasers became the leaders, leaving him with a big job to do. He took up the challenge with aplomb, grinding out 14 laps to take the win, 1 lap clear of Sam Humphreys and Philip Morris.

The race for the minor places was pretty tight as less than 7 mins separated the next 5 riders. 3rd placed Morris probably had the most entertaining ride as a stomach upset saw him diving off the trail occasionally before resuming the race!

Elite woman competitor Sally Bigham is a completely different athlete to what she was just months ago and Catton Park held memories both bad and good for this dedicated marathon rider. Her transformation was highlighted as she cruised to victory, lapping her fellow competitors on her way to the race win, with a lap count and time that would have placed her 3rd in the men's event. Mel Alexander who has been helping Bigham with her skills was left to pick up 2nd ahead of Helen Jackson in 3rd.

Seasoned performer Roy Hunt continued his addiction to winning in the fun men's solo race. Despite numerous hints about retiring, he can't quite give up the fun that enduro riding provides and the prospect of mixing it up with 135 other competitors was too alluring. The grand vet unaware of his position in the race until later on where he thought he was racing for 3rd, just kept plugging on. A couple of punctures left him resigned to missing out on his podium fix??.that is until he finished when he found he'd won! And convincingly! His13 laps was one more than runner-up Ben Simmons, with Darren Ryden taking 3rd.

In the women's Fun solo race Sally Daw quickly took control, taking a clear win with 11 laps while Salsa rider Faith Addison took 2nd and Sally Buckworth 3rd.

Sunshine meant umbrellas became sun shades

The closest race of the day had to be the women's pairs where, after the 6 hours, a mind boggling 6 secs was all that separated first from second! Mum and daughter combo Anna Buick and Sara Flatt had a right old ding dong battle with the ladies of Bigfoot MBC. A puncture for the Salsa duo almost looked certain to be their undoing, in such a close fought race, however youngster Anna who has been waiting years to get the chance to compete wasn't giving up just yet and with almost superhuman effort went out on her last lap recording the fastest lap of the day for the women's pairs and she clinched the victory in the closing stages of the race.

With 15 laps apiece the benchmark, the men's pairs had also been shaping up as a close run battle. Mountain biking can be an unforgiving and fickle sport, where a puncture or two can change an almost predictable outcome. Fate once again threw a spanner in the works for more than one team over the course of the day, including the duo of Bad Ass Bikes/ KCNC - Jonny Pugh and Ryan Bevis. A close fought battle was being played out between them at the KTM pairing of Matt Barrett and Rob Friel. Half way through the race Pugh punctured leaving him with a half-lap race before he could swap with partner Bevis, leaving the KTM boys to steal a march. Rather than feel despondent, the Bad Ass boys kicked drove hard to regain the lead and take the eventual win, taking 3mins with them over 2nd placed KTM. Third spot was an ever-closer fought affair with 18 seconds separating 3 teams in the running. Yeti UK clung onto 3rd, with the Websters duo outing the Salsa Factory team by just 1 sec to take 4th.

Finally the mixed pairs went to Jules Toon and Oli Cox, despite Rachel Fenton and Chris Peddar being led to believe they were leading. Both teams recorded 13 strong laps, with Cox & Toone having a 5 minute advantage by the end.

The pits were a constant scene of activity

As the race finished dirt-streaked and hollow-eyed riders headed hungrily for the catering tent eager to replenish lost calories. Eyes were on the bubbling mass of rain clouds that had started to accumulate and everyone was wondering whether we'd have a repeat of last year's flash downpour just in time for the podiums! Luckily the rain gods looked favourably on the podiums!

Post-Race Rider Comments:

Rachel Fenton & Chris Peddar - Mixed pairs
R-That was really good I just went out there to see if I could bury myself, I always feel like I under perform at certain races, so I wanted to see what I could do here and it turned out really good.

C- We both really took equal billing out there I guess, though I admit to not being the XC racer of the two of us, and this is like riding 3 XC races back to back!

R- We just did 3 laps on and 3 laps off and Chris drew the short straw and did the run. We had no idea how the race unfolded, we had no idea who we were competing against we just had to keep riding and see what happened. We didn't recognise anyone around us but after 2 1/2 hours we were told we were leading, which came as a shock. It spurred us on, but in the end it turns out we were racing against a couple who were in the wrong category, so they won in the end.

C- I love the course here and Pat Adams seems to have a direct line to the weather gods, well he seems to for E6!

Lee Williams - Solo
That was superb, I went out fast from the start and just hoped that fatigue wouldn't get the best of me! Luckily I managed to keep cramp off for the last couple of laps, so yeah all good. I managed to open out a good lead early on and extended it to about 20 mins in the end so I'm pretty pleased with that. I did go off quite hard and I didn't expect to get to the end quite as strong as I did, but my intentions were to make it a good race and it was.

The pressure was on of course as all the team's bosses were here, so of course I wanted to put in a good performance! Superb course once again and we're blessed with the weather, it's just made the atmosphere that much better for us and the spectators, there were loads of people cheering us on, it was great.
The run was fine, I don't mind that, though I think I might have been one of only a handful of riders who actually went out with running shoes on, I thought I'll waste a little bit of time in the pits changing shoes, but I wanted to make sure I did a comfy run. I came into the pits probably 5th or 6th, so that was a good spot, I just wanted to run comfy and start the ride strongly and it worked well.

It didn't all go smoothly though, I had a puncture on the second lap, I had a bit of a gap so came in to the pits to change it and saw the leading solo riders come back but soon caught them back up and then got the lead back and started opening up a gap again. It's been a superb season so far, 5 races with 4 wins, the support I've had this year so far has made a huge difference, it's good riding for someone rather than just yourself.

Roy Hunt - Fun Solo
Yeah that was the fun/old category for me! There's just something that brings the best out of me on this course, it's such fun, I love it. I had no idea what was going on while I was out there, I was told with about 3 laps to go that I was lying in 3rd, I'd already punctured twice and I punctured on my final lap so it wasn't looking good, I was thinking I'd be lucky to keep 3rd. Then when I finished and saw the results, that was a nice surprise, I had no idea! I was enjoying myself out there but saving a bit for the last lap, but when I punctured, I thought well that's it.

I know I've been threatening to retire for a few years now, but I think, as you get older you can always step out and do an enduro. I like riding and I like riding for a long time so enduros are perfect for me, whereas XC is quite short and quite fast. Overall great day, enjoyable course with an added bonus at the end, no complaints from me!

Jonny Pugh & Ryan Bevis - Men's Pairs
JP -Yeah that was tough, good course nice and fast just how I like it and yeah it was good fun.

RB - We decided to do two laps on two laps off and that worked well for us. The start was the main thing for us and I did the run and then kept focusing on riding strongly keeping up the pressure. We punctured at one point, which put us on a back foot, but we upped the effort and clawed ourselves back into the race and by the last few laps took the lead. We made it hard for ourselves really! The KTM boys had the lead for most of the race; they even had about a 4min gap on us at one point because of the puncture.

JP - It was a pretty close run race, which made it more exciting and me puncturing made it even more interesting. I had to run nearly 1/2 a lap to get back in and change.

RB - Yeah Jonny went on to do a couple of stormers after that and we got the lead back so even though it looked like a disaster it turned out okay! The course has to be the best one yet, especially with the sections they've worked on. It was a bit interesting to begin with but after a few laps you knew where to push it and how to rail the berms, so yeah it was good.

Sally Bigham - women's Solo
Brilliant day, I really enjoyed myself out there and felt so strong, it was just perfect; perfect weather, perfect course lots of fun. I wasn't quite sure how I would be; I was looking forward to testing my form today. I must thank Matt Hart at Torq who's taken on the challenge of coaching me; this is a first for me so I wanted to see how I would perform. It's a great start to my season and I'm so pleased I felt so strong out there. I've improved so much as a rider, I've had mixed fortune as I've developed, especially on this course! 2 years ago at SITS I was whisked away in an ambulance due to not realising the importance of fluid, so today I with that at the back of my mind, I drank, drank, drank!

Even though I've improved so much, I still feel a bit of a rookie though! I've got so much to learn still, I've worked hard this winter on my technique and my skills, I have to thanks Mel Alexander and Mark Sprat for that along with Kate and Dev Betts all of whom have been brilliant teaching me bike handling and downhill moves! Also can I thank the guys at Ride Bike.com for all their help too!

Anna Buick & Sara Flatt - Women's pairs
That was very very close; in fact it came down to just a few meters in the end. We just about got it I put so much effort into that last lap. Mum punctured with 3 laps to go and it was close then, so from there on it was all out! We're both really pleased; we would have been really gutted had we not gone the win today. We rode one lap on, one lap off as that suited us best, and every lap it was eyeballs out, with two laps to go I was seriously thinking I've only got one lap left in me!

But in the end we both managed to go that extra mile and pull it out of the bag, when you know it's for the win you can always find a bit more. It was lovely to be able to ride with mum. Mum & Dad have been riding this event for years, I've always been too young, so this is the first year I've finally been old enough to pair up with Mum and have a go. The course was good, you definitely knew the horses had been round here; you really had to put the hammer down so you didn't get stuck in the ruts. It was fast and kind of relentless, but good!

Quirky shot of the day - four armed rider spotted at Enduro 6!
