2012 Selection Criteria for North West Region Teams

In 2012 the North West Region will be selecting teams of youth riders to take part in prestigious national events.

For the third year the UK School Games will include cycling in its programme, this year, incorporating the Inter Regional Road Championships. The Inter-Regional Track Championship will again be held at Newport Velodrome, and there will be a new Inter Regional Mountain Bike, following the success of the School Games last year. During the winter the selected track riders will have the opportunity to race in front of the packed crowds at the Revolution meetings.

The UKSG, IRTC and IRMTBC will be contested by 13 different regions from around the UK & NI and is a fantastic opportunity for youth riders to experience high profile competition and being part of larger team. The UKSG take place in London, with the last day being track racing on the Olympic velodrome from 7-9th May. The IRTC take place in Newport during the 14-16th September and the IRMTBC have a provisional date of 31st August – 2nd Sept.

2012 events (provisional):

6 – 8th April – Youth Tour of Scotland ( 4 Boys ,4 girls)

7 – 9th May – School Games, incorporating a 2 day IRRC and 1 days track racing.(4 boys 4 girls)

2 – 4th June – North West Youth Tour (6 boys, 6 girls)

31st Aug – 2nd Sept – Inter Regional MTB Champs (all details to be confirmed)

14 – 16th - September – Inter Regional Track Champs, Newport (4 boys, 3 girls)

Selection criteria for Road Events:

The Regional Team Manager together with the other members of the selection panel, using their knowledge of the capabilities and nature of the riders, will be used to determine the best riders to represent the Region. This will then be put forward for approval by the regional board.

The closing date for the Tour of Scotland is 10th March. This means a selection will be made based on last year’s results and performances for this particular event. A selection will be made by 1st February and riders selected will be notified. Only those riders expressing an interest with the Regional Manager will be considered for selection for this event. Riders will be expected to contribute £100 towards the overall cost of this event.

The selection deadline for the School Games is 19th March. Selection races for this event are:

10th March – CDNW Youth league round 1 – Southport.17th March – Dolan Schools circuit races 1 – Southport.

Note: An accumulative points scoring system will be used. Points will be awarded as follows:

5, 3, 1 points will be awarded to the first 3 best placed riders from the north west in each race at both these events. However, points will not be awarded for handicapped events.

Points will be added together from both these events and the 2 highest points scoring riders from both girls and boys, (4 in all) will gain automatic selection. The other 2 girls and 2 boys places will be selected by the Team Manager together with the selection panel and approved by the regional board.

Track experience is essential.

Performances and results from CDNW league, Dolan series, Litherland and the NW closed circuit youth Champs, will be considered when making the selection for the North West team to compete in the North West Youth Tour. A selection will be made and a team entered by 30th April.

Selection criteria for Track Events:

The Regional Team Manager together with the other members of the selection panel, using their knowledge of the capabilities and nature of the riders, will be used to determine the best riders to represent the Region. This will then be put forward for approval by the regional board.

Considered events will include Regional events of the National Omnium Series and the National Omnium Final together with the National Track Championships.

Selection criteria for MTB

The Regional Team Manager together with the other members of the selection panel, using their knowledge of the capabilities and nature of the riders, will be used to determine the best riders to represent the Region. This will then be put forward for approval by the regional board.

Considered events will include the British Mountain Bike Race Series together with any other NW regional MTB series. Selection races may be used for this event but will be confirmed at a later date.

Overall factors which may possibly affect Selection Criteria:

Personal behaviour and/or disciplineAvailability

Application, ability and attitude displayed at Regional Schools of Racing and/or other training events promoted by the Region.Preference may be given to riders who in the opinion of the selectors will contribute most to the overall success of the Region’s Talent Development Objectives

Selections will be made based on the following criteria that shall constitute the ‘performance' for the purpose of selection:

Attacking riding - ability to make repeated efforts. • Bike handling ability - cornering skills etc • Finish position • Tactical awareness

Team Spirit and ability to follow Team managers instructions

The selectors will consider performances in each individual event in its own right, taking into account the above key selection points. An accumulative or average scoring / points system from all events shall NOT be used for selection unless otherwise stated.

The above proposed events for the North West team in 2012 are all National level events.

Although performances and results from regional events will be considered when making selections, There needs to be a significant increase in numbers of riders from the North West competing at a National level across all the disciplines if we are to better our results from the previous season. Results and performances in National level events will be considered with priority.
